rebuilding a cummins

greetings, im thinking about purchasing an '88 dodge 2500 cummins for $3500. (very little rust) with 175k.

could anyone tell me what would it roughly cost to rebuild the motor?

and if $3500 is too much?

thanks, paul

Sure it's an '88? 1989-1993 are the 1st generation Dodge Rams with the Cummins motor.

for $3500 and only 175k miles, it'd better run like a dream!

my old '91 has nearly 400k miles on it, and about 275k of that has been spent pulling 20k lbs!

I think he is saying that with only 175 K it ought to run like a dream. 175K is nothing for a 5.9 Cummins. I payed 4K for a 92 1 ton dually 4WD with 259K and I dont plan on rebuilding that engine.
Buy it!!!

I'm saying for $3500, it'd better run very well...

I bought my '91 4 years ago with 198k on it for $3500...

if an '89 needs an engine rebuild, it's not worth anywhere near $3500 IMHO

Yea, the real question is , why are you considering rebuilding the engine at 175K?

That's what I was thinking also. I bought a '93 with 186k and I'm installing it without opening it up.
