Basic Questions for Rebuilding a Cummins

Pretty much have made my mind to pull my engine. To do that, I will have to get an engine stand and crane. Or at least rent a crane.

What capacities should I be looking at. The cummins manual hasn't arrived yet so I don't know the weights.

What kind of stands are you using? Can you do it without a high bay?

I was able to put the assembled engine in with a China made 2000lb cap cherry picker but it needed to be extended full out for the reach and it is only rated at 500lb. It was pretty wobbly but it got the job done, I would think the rentals would all be better quality than the one I used. You will need a stout stand to in order to turn the engine while its mounted. I didn't pull the hood off so I don't think you need a high bay.

I think the engine weight is listed in your owners manual. About 1150 lbs as I recall.

When we loaded the 12v into the back of my truck, we had a two ton crane extended out to the 1.5 ton setting. The back wheels of the crane were bouncing in the air . . .

We pulled mine with a 2 tom chain fault hung from the celing in our shop. The disavantage in doing it that way is you have to pull the truck back as you pull the motor up.
