Rear Main Seal at 93K?!?
Rear Main Seal at 93K?!?
'Nuther truckload of junk to NM and stopped in Flagstaff at the bank, left the engine running with the AC on for the dog and came back to a pancake sized puddle of clean motor oil under the truck with a steady drip, drip, drip. Well %$#$%'ing GREAT. Just had the oil changed at the local (decent) auto shop and hoped they'd left the drainplug or the filter loose. pulled into a lubeshop and got in the pit witht he tech and clean, green Rotella is dripping from the drain hole in the auto tranny's bellhousing. Stopped to eat in Winslow for 45 minutes and left a pretty large puddle in the local Mexican restaurant's lot. ***?!? Rear main at 93k!?! How come I don't see hundreds of threads like this? Is mine the only one? A bit dissapointed in Blort right now.... Where's the renowned Cummins reliability? Anybody know a good diesel shop in Northern NM?
Oh yeah: Got 20.7 mpg on the trip over..... H.

Bummer. Sorry about the bad luck. With only 93K and 16 yrs old, has the truck sat for long periods without being driven? Reason I ask is I have heard of this happening. Maybe post this in help? or whatever they call it section. Good Luck
I used to drive a 94 when I worked at a lumber yard. The rear main let go just under 95,000. They were lucky though because it was still under warrenty. There is also a plug that covers the cam. Kinda like a freeze plug. I have heard those can rust and leak. I had one let go on a gasser once because it was not installed correctly.
i agree as well, if a vechicle sits for long periods of time without running the seal will shrink and get hard and brittle then when you bring her out they will leak happens to the best of us.....time to get the wrenches out....

Yes. The seal in your 1993 is at least 16 years old!!! Some parts wear with time. Also, I believe you don't hear of these stories all the time because people replace them any time the opportunity arises. For instance, my 1993 with 55K miles has a new seal. I thought I should do a few mods for the long haul including the input/pilot shaft bearing replacing bronze bushing, so I replaced it when the flywheel was off. Also replaced the throwout bearing when I was in there too.. The clutch however looked and mic'd to brand new specs.
I had a 91 that leaked like that. Replaced the rear main. Still leaked. Pulled the tranny again, and then pulled the bellhousing adaptor, and it was the cam plug. $1.79 at Cummins (might be $2.29 now, this was in '03-04), and several hours labor later.......
I agree- low miles usually mean stuff has sat and dry rotted. I dont like to buy vehicles with less than 10Kmi/ yr average; prefer 15-20k/ yr. They stay loosened up that way.
