Rear hub seal help
My rear wheel hub seal started leaking. No big deal, bought a new seal and checked the sticky for any details I might need and then tore into it.
But when trying to get the old seal out something is different. I don't have pictures so bear with me while I try to explain...
The old seal was not flat on the back side (inside). It had a hump. Odd I thought but oh well. So while trying to pry it out, the "hub" part its driven into starts to come out with it. Odd again I'm thinking. But it is ultimately captured at the very edge by the actual hub itself which has a lip (very thin, not structural) which keeps it from coming out. I've never seen a seal that sits in a heavy sleeve of some sort inside the hub?
This is totally new to me. Nothing like my '76 W200 rear hubs (which I believe are Dana 60's too) or my '51 ton Power Wagon. I realize this may be hard to understand without pictures but makes sense to someone who's dealt with it before. I can't find any sticky or article that describes this.
Any one?

Sort of. How does the dust shield come off?
It reminds me of the hub cover you'd find on the outside of the front hub that still allows you access to lock the hubs.

It must be a dust shield but I can't figure how to get it off either. It goes all the way down to the base of the drum.
And I guess it must be a 70 not a 60 huh, the seal I got ins too small.
How did you ultimately get yours off Thrashingcows?

I don't know if this works right or not but here's a picture I think.

Wonder why there is no discussion on the shields if they are such a bugger? Surely we're not the only two to be lucky enough to have them.

The shield is there to duct gear lube to the outside of the drum (between the hub and drum) in case of seal failure. When intact they do a good job of saving the brake shoes. Removal requires driving out the wheel studs.

Ah, and that it did. The drum surface and shoes are fine.
So if I drive the studs out I can remove the shield and reuse? I've always reused the studs on my Power Wagon, can I do the same here?
Thanks,

If you haven't damaged them too much, you do not have to remove them to change the seal. The inside diameter of the shield started out being large enough to allow the seal to pass through. It is just sheet metal, you should be able to work the opening back out to its original diameter, or in the worst case, trim the lip back with a grinder or dremel tool.

Not hardly. This shield will not allow the seal to pass through.
