rear axle bearing retainer nut

So I'm getting ready to put my new drum on the rear axle of my 92 4x4, and there was only one reatiner nut holding those bearings in there. I am used to there being a pair of nuts that lock against each other. what are the specs for installing this nut? There was also some kind of little sheetmetal wedge like part that slipped in the slot in the axle housing, but I couldn't see how it helped keep everything together.

Can anybody help me out with this?

Thanks!

Mark

Your setup sounds the same as my 02.

The hub nut is "technically" a one use nut. It is essentially a Nylock nut. The wedge is just that. It fits into the keyway on the axle hub and is driven into the nut, locking it in place.

The wedge is re-usable. The nut in my mind could be re-used, even though I replaced mine. On mine, the wedge had been driven into the threads on the nut and I just changed it out.

I don't know about the specs on your axle. Mine is a Dana 80. The axle nut on mine is torqued to 140 ft/lbs and then backed off an 1/8 of a turn. The wedge is driven home and be done with it.

Your torque specs I don't know, but overall, the procedure seems to be the same setup.

Hope it helps!

Jeff

thats as good of directions as you'll find, and you can reuse nut if wedge will stay in, even though your not sposed to.

Torque is 120-140 ft*lbs, then back off 1/3 (120*) of a turn. Technically, you should torque the nut while rotating the wheel. My nut has been reused three times. It looks and works fine.

Thanks, guys. The reason I didn't see how the wedge helped anything is because it was loose and kind of bent. I bought some 1/4" keystock to make a new one with.

Well, it's really not a wedge, at least not one mine. It's more like bent sheet metal cut like a wedge. The two edges bite into the nylon and keep it from moving. The axle flange holds the piece in so it doesn't back out.

Yeah, that's what mine is like too. I went ahead and reused it because it was able to grab and got it tapped in there so it wasn't loose.

Quad4x4 has the axle nut setup you're looking for, Mark.

The wedges and nylocs are available from Dorman, so you don't have to pay dealer prices on those.
