Talking radiator upgrades, other newbie questions...

Hi guys and gals,

I just signed up, but have been reading this page for a while. I have lots of questions that have probably been asked many times before! I have a 1990 w-250, 5sp, 3.54 gears and 207,000 miles on it. I am in the process of upgrading the radiator to one from a 1991.5 to 1993. Does anyone know if I need to change the fan, fan clutch assembly? I read somewhere that the newer(92-93) fan assemblies are better?

Also, I have a early 1991 w250 parts truck. drivetrain is the same as my 1990. It has the look of the newer 1st gens, but with the same small radiator and is not intercooled. my question is can i use the core support and grille on my 90? will this newer core support take an intercooler, even though it never had one but looks like the ones that do, with the more modern grille??? boy, thats too much typing, my fingers hurt!!! thanks, I really enjoy this site, everyone seems to go the extra mile to help out!

Evan

Welcome to DTR!

I'm not sure on the first question. On the second question, the core supports are probably the same on both your trucks. You can put the new grille on the truck anyway, you will just need to remount the headlight buckets.

The core support and grille will fit just fine. It can be made to accomodate the intercooler. The radiator can also be fitted to the older style core support. The 91 I owned had a larger radiator in it, and the guy took the brackets off the little radiator and had them put on the bigger one. Made for some close clearance with the fan to radiator (about 1/2-3/4 inch), but it worked til the fan hub bearing gave out on I70 outside Terre Haute at midnight. You will also need the unobtanium newer fan shroud if you decide you want one.

I assume you know you need to trim out the early rad. support to fit the later radiator. You should be able to get the later, shorter, fan spacer from cummins ( I don't know the part #). You can get by, but might hit the radiator in and accident or bad bump. Hopefully the later grill you have is comeing with the later core support. You'll also need the later goose neck and upper hose.
