A quick A/C Question
A quick A/C Question
Hey everybody,
I drove my 92' on a little road trip this weekend. From Junction City Kansas, to Remsen Iowa. About 320 miles or 6 hours give or take a few minutes or miles. Anyway, the a/c worked pretty good for the most part. Just one problem. It takes usually 10 mins of driving to get the a/c to start blowing cold air. But when it does, it does a good job!! Also because it is a 6 hour drive, i noticed the a/c would work good for about 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour then would not have cold air. But usually i could roll the window down and turn the fan to low and in 5 to 10 mins it would start blowin' cold again! My dad and i checked the the system a few weeks ago and it showed full charge of freon( still factory R-12). What dom ya'll think is the problem? Or is this just the nature of the beast with these 1st gens?
Also if anybody wanted to know, odo is broke so i had to get miles from maps and figured milege on the way up was right at 20mpg or a hair more!! i was estatic!!
Thanks

There is probably a lot of things it could be especially one with r-12.... it's been in there a long time. 1-At some point moisture could have invaded the system and it slugs back to the compressor (mixed with the oil). 2- How did you check the charge? 3- The low pressure cutout switch could be having intermittant contact inside the suction line back to the compessor. Or that switch could be bad...as in cutting off but real slow to come back at the right temp. 3- The filter-dryer may need changing. 4-There maybe trash or yucky oil plugging the TXV (thermal expansion valve)... the list goes on.... The compressor is old.... the evaporator is probably ok.... the condenser is probably ok..... good luck
