A question for original owners and possibly a rear expert
I have a 93 w250 with only 16,000 orig miles, limited slip D70, 3.55 ratio. My rear chatters going around turns.
I have searched all the posts and they all point to the lube issues. I replaced the lube with what is called for in the manual plus the additive.I have put in two 8oz? tubes with no luck. It doesn't chatter cold, but will around turns a few miles down the road. The tighter the turn the more it chatters/moans/grinds. I have no reason to believe the oil I drained wasn't from the factory and should have been correct
Is it possible that the rear just needs to break in yet? Original new owners, do you remember your new truck doing this? If so how long?
Is it possible I am using the wrong additive? It is auto parts store generic stuff for limited slip and says it is Chrysler compatible with the Mopar part # called for. Should I drop it out and install another oil change using the current batch as a rinse process?

You will need to add a friction modifier to your rear diff. Equatorque is available at most parts stores. You are supposed to add 1 oz at a time drive and test until the chatter goes away. I have always just added the whole tube then find an empty parking lot and do some figure eights to mix the equatorque with the diff fluid. That should cure the chatter.

Bob,That's exactly what I did, even used Equatorque. Dumped in one tube, did figure eights while the wife was grocery shopping.(the people in the lot must have thought I was nuts!) No luck, added another half tube, tested, then the rest, more eights, no luck yet. Some posts said throw in more than 1 tube so I did. Possibly too much? I doubt so as it is a friction modifier so it should make them slip more or too much with the increased dose. After searching I am here in the open looking for anything else I didn't already find. Thanks.
I had the same problem. I used the parts store brand and it still chattered. Drained the lube out and refilled with 85/140 and it still had a chatter. Hmmm as bad as I hated to go to the dealer which I don't like very much and bought the Chrysler/Dodge brand for a small bottle at 18+ dollars and put it in. The chatter almost went away so I went back and bought a second bottle and put half of it in and the chatter went away. Don't know which did the most good the fresh gear oil or the high dollar friction modifier. But no chatter now.
Equatorque has always worked when I've used it, however I have always used Amsoil full synthetic in my rear diff. Amsoil says you should not need a friction modifier with their 75W90, but they offer a friction modifier for rear diffs. If it were mine I would get a good quality synthetic diff fluid - such as Royal Purple, Amsoil or Red Line. Red line also makes a quality synthetic friction modifier.

I have Amsoil 75/90 in it.That's what I run, had some on the shelf ready to go. Like I said I tried it all, looking for that odd idea, or someone who thinks it needs a break in period after 16 years. Thanks for the help, sorry I beat ya to all the obviuos. i try not to ask unless I research and still get stumped.

I would just drive it some more! It could possibly go away. It'll need at least 200,000 miles till all the problems go away! lol where'd you find a 1st gen with 16,000 miles?

^^^ Yea..Barn queen I'd guess..That would be THE lowest mile 1sr gen I have ever heard of..
Yup, barn queen for sure. Outta KC MO.
I had the cover off, shiny new D70 L/S.
About four years ago there was an LE Red/silver -center, reg cab 92 or3 up in Canada, garage kept, Absolute showroom cond. 6,000 miles. Advertised on ebay for around $26,000 USD. Didn't have the scratch or I would still have it. I was a bit too young to buy new in 93, luckily 16 yrs later I have as close as anyone could come. Previous owner has 2 more in the 17-19000 mile range in the barn(a collector). Keep your eyes on Autotrader that's where I found this.
I don't think he'll part with the others yet. This is the lowest miles in the US most likely except for maybe a rarely used government truck. Pretty penny but worth it all. Like brand new. Pics soon!
