pyrometer/thermocouple ?'s

i finally received my thermocouple yesterday afternoon and installed it in my manifold. turns out, my gauge is bad. luckily my truck is mainly stock except for these 4x.014's and my fuel pin turned 90*. but, i've been driving it fairly easy since the H/G replacement. anyhow, i'm wondering about this thermocouple being a 0-1600* F range, could it be used with any other type of gauge like autometer, isspro, etc. as long as the length of the leads isn't changed? i've noticed that some gauges require a type K thermocouple. what exactly does type K mean or refer to? i think it's for high temps as opposed to a type J which i think is for low temps. i looked at some stewart warner gauges in a catalog at the local napa store. they look pretty good, but i haven't found prices for them. anybody use them or hear anything good/bad about them? autometer is kinda pricey just for a gauge itself starting around $99. isspro lists one with a range of 100-1500* F for $77. would my 0-1600* F thermocouple work or do i have to be precise about the range? here's the thermocouple i've got... VDO Thermocouple TIA for any advice/info/opinions.

it'll work with any gauge as long as the range is 1600* max?

well what i've figured out is that isspro's pyro with a range of 100-1500* uses a thermocouple with a range of 0-1600*. the gauge comes with a signal amplifier (which i've never heard of using before) but it also states that i need to buy lead wires? for those of you running isspro, what style and length is the right kind?

The thermocouple doesn't really have a "range", the range is determined by the gauge.

thanks dave! guess i'm backwards in my thinking that the thermocouple range determines the gauge range. tech support at VDO said that the thermocouple doesn't care what gauge is connected to the other end of it, so there's a good chance it'll work with just about any gauge.
