Pump Timing

Okay so on here I see that everyone moves the pump 1/8in. to advance the pump and they use a strap or something to do so. My buddy says he just turned a stud with a lock nut on the back side of the pump closest to the cab to advance his timing . Does that do the same thing as what everyone else does?
