Pump replaced
Pump replaced
Finally had the inj. pump replaced by dealer on re-call. Boost is down to 16 wot (was getting 21 before) EGT is approx. 150 degrees lower, and truck is running LOUDER than before. I'm guessing the boost and temps are more due to the fueling changing but the "sound" of the engine...is that the timing that can change that so drastically? It's so different now...really rattling. Runs great, but taking a bit to get used to. I never had the timing checked with the old pump so it may have been off and now it is correct and this is what a real cummins sounds like..(my first and only) It's so hard to describe sounds with text (I have a new respect for writers) the detonation seemed far more subdued with the old pump. Now the wife can here me coming around the block instead of just pulling in the garage! The question, in case it got lost in my ramblings, is, can the timing effect the "sound" of these engines that much??
Re:Pump replaced
Timing plays a key part in the way an engine sounds. Usually a more advanced timing will make the truck louder. Dont worry about it. My guess is that your old pumps timing was off and the new one is now set to correct specs.
Re:Pump replaced
Don't get hung up on higher boost - how does the truck feel. Have you got more power? When I had my new pump installed my boost dropped but the power went up - big time. I have since adjusted my wastegate for more boost but I still have plenty of power.
Bob

Re:Pump replaced
Dino, I just got mine back with the new recall pump installed also....feels good, huh
. Mine also is a little louder. I was concerned, but it doesn't sound like it is as loud as yours, though. But I do notice it. I recently adjusted the valves and I was beginning to wonder if I needed to check them again. My guess is Okie is probably right....though with my dealership, it could definitely be a problem due to install. I don't have gauges so I can't comment there...but it does seem to have more power and it is running great!!

New pump, RECALL ?? whats up and why would DODGE recall a fuel pump 10+ years later and if so I want one too,If its for free take it,those are not cheap kids I must of missed something somewhere? Please explane this one guys
Re:Pump replaced
In 94, a safety recall for a possible runaway condition on the 92 models was issued. Since alot of guys didnt know about it and safety recalls can be done at any time, they have been getting there pump replaced. This was issued for 92 models only.

Re:Pump replaced
Actually the recall was issued for '91.5-'92 models, and pumps that were replaced in all '91-'93's before something like may of '93. If yo want to know how to find out if yours is affected look here http://dodgeram.info/tsb/recalls/605.htm. it gives you a rundown on how to inspect your pump for recall status. Checked mine out and unfortunately it is not affected. just thought i would straighten this issue out.
Re:Pump replaced
How do you find out if your truck has allready had this done or not(bought it used)? Call the dealer and let them run th VIN maybe? Also my pump has been tweaked. Reckon that will affect anything?
Re:Pump replaced
Before you call dodge or the recall center, goto that link posted earlier. It will tell you how to identify your pump and if it is part of the recall. Otherwise you may have to do some jumping before you will get the correct data. The pumps in question were all within a 6 month period of manufacture, however if you had a pump replaced under warranty for some time after that manufacture date, you may have had a faulty pump installed. Vin will not show that in most cases.
-Jim-
Re:Pump replaced
Your pump timing can affect the sound, your EGT's, boost, mileage, throttle responsiveness, and higher cylinder pressures. The injection process begins sooner and so does the ignition sequence/burn time.
Basically, higher timing results in a "harder" sounding idle, and high cyl. pressures. It also helps lower EGT's slightly and boost has been know to go down a tad as well.
Your temp change(s) suggest that the timing is probably a bit higher and that you now have room to run a bit more fuel if you choose to. The earliest 1st Gens had 1.35mm lift timing, and when emissions got tighter, they went to intercooled and 1.25mm lift timing. Lower timing less emissions.
By way of example, I bet everyone here can close their eyes and imagine the sound of one of the older Mercedes engines, that characteristic rattle... they ran advanced timing I've been told.
Just as a bit of trivia, did you know that some of the "nasty" second gens run timing as much as,
mid to high 30's advance
....

Re:Pump replaced
Well I found a reciept in the glove box that shows pump replaced campaign #605 dated 8-10-94 but I cant make out the numbers on the pump or see any infinity symbol. I'll get a magnifying glass tommorow and see if I can tell. Thanks for the info!
