Pulley

I know I read somewhere a long time ago that there is a pulley for our motors that take a v belt. I am looking to drive a compressor and I need a pulley to run the belt off of. Does anyone know where to get that pulley?

I have seen 2 versions. One is used on the Cummins 4BT to drive a cylinder head mounted vacuum pump. The major difference in this one is that it fits over the standard fan pulley and mounts to the fan hub shaft with 4 bolts. You may be able to adapt one of these by either changing the fan to the gasser bolt on 4BT style or possibly drill the center out to fit over the thread fan mounting shaft that is used on our trucks provided there is enough thread length. Then you would need to tack weld it to the fan pulley by drilling holes through the hub face mounting area of the accessory pulley or use the 4 original mounting holes. From memory the pulley is between .060-.120" thickness in this area.

The other version I seen was from a second gen Dodge Cummins which was an integral part of the pulley. It was used to drive a hydraulic pump to operate a manlift located on the rear of the truck. So there are a few options out there. The 4BT version sometimes show up on 4BTswaps.com in the for sale section. Pictures and Cummins part numbers are also available over there if you want to try that route. For future references please post the part number of the second gen Dodge version provided you locate one or whatever you find that works.

I would call a marine engine supplier. Most all boats have extra belts for water pumps and hyd pumps. On my Mitsubishi I had a machine shop turn me out a 4 groove pulley that hooks to the crank. Thats in addition to the 2 that is already used for the engine.

It seems to me that somewhere on this board someone came up with an alternator pulley that had a V on the front of the pulley. They were trying to do the same thing.

Kilby Enterprises has an alternator pulley they sell that has a V-belt shiev to drive anything you heart desires although a bit expensive.

I was working on a similar design however my v-belt pulley was going to be bolted to the face of my alternator pulley and situate my compressor above the alternator, but I got an electric compressor for now.

What are you going to use for a compressor? take a walk through a truck junkyard, there are a lot of suitable air compressors from the truck that have air brakes Bendix TuFlo is a very common name.

I have replaced many of them on transit coaches

I am going to drive an air compressor with it. I already have the compressor I just gotta figure out a pulley and some mounting brackets. Thanks a lot for the help I haven't been able to do much research myself because my computer crapped out on me. I am posting from my blackberry and its not much fun to try and do the research on.

If your AC is bad, I've seen a guy around here take out the compressor but use the drive pulley to drive a hydraulic pump for plow/dump.

My ac still works so I don't really want to go that route but I think the alt pulley may be my best bet. I wonder if it will turn the compressor fast enough

do you have an elc. clutch on the comp. if so you can buy a pulley for a serp. belt and run a longer belt. have look a tire service truck.

The compressor already has a clutch and a v belt pulley.

All of the Cummins B Series engines that I have ever seen have all used the fan pulley as the accessory drive for either vacuum pumps or air compressors. If you eliminate the fan pulley you are then also limiting your possibility of adding an accessory drive such as the vacuum pump in the following picture:

Also note that the vehicle in the picture was usually equipped with an electric fan. At least the ones I have are that way.
