Power steering seal!!
Power steering seal!!
Anyone or a sticky, on replacing the seal where the steering post goes into the gear box. Mine has been leakin every since i got it (po said it leaked but he didn't know where).
hey bc, i'll borrow my granddaughters;she knows how to put'm on here. I ended up doing the one on my frord 250 -91 ,because the mech., round here said they didn't know how, go figure.
I've done this on both my 90, and my 91. I found it easiest to remove the wheel and work in the wheelwell. Remove the splash gaurd rubber in the wheelwell. Remove the steering shaft. This will give you clear access to the gearbox seal. Get youself some brake cleaner, and clean up the seal area before you start disassembly. You will see a circlip/snap ring holding in a dust shield. Remove the snap ring and dust shield, than clean the area again. This is where you will see the seal. This is where I depart from the "suggested" method.
I get a couple of drywall screws, and run them into the seal (about midway between the inner lip and the outer ring) then use a side cutter pliers to grab the screws and pry out the seal. You will get some leakage, so have a drain pan ready. Inspect the shaft at the sealing area. If it's rusty or lightly pitted, try to smooth it out with some emery cloth, than clean it again. Than just tap in the new seal using a deep socket of the same diameter as the seal. Once the seal is in place, put a few dabs of grease on the seal/shaft area, and then install the dust shield and snap ring.
