power steering pump seal

One of my dads trucks has a leaky seal at the vacum/power steering pump. I found this Cummins # Vacumn/Power Steering Pump Oil Seal Kit
Cummins Part # 4089842

on this site. I called a local Cummins dealer and was told that part # was for a piston kit! I explained what it was for and was told they couldnt get parts for our 5.9 motor! Has anyone out there bought this kit from a Cummins dealer? If so do you have thier number handy? Is there differences in dealers? Are some only able to get parts for the big motors? I have a 5.9 Cummins motor at my work that is hooked to a water pump for pressure for our sprinkler system incase of a fire. We have called Cummins in the past for service calls! (before I got to be the mechanic there). I would think all Cummins dealers should be able to get Cummins parts! Anyone ever ran into this before or did the dealer just want to get me off the phone! Thanks, Robert

Cummins CrossPoint Louisville KY

#502-491-4263

This same place was Cumberland Cummins for years and years, and I have no idea why they changed the name; nearly everyone still refers to them as Cumberland Cummins.

I don't do the credit-card thing, never had one and hope I never do.

I call them and give them my order; they give me an "order number", which I write on the money-order and make note of in the envelope with the money-order, and I always get my stuff quick; good folks to deal with so far.

Ok, I called another Cummins dealer today and gave them the Cummins part number listed on this website for a power steering pump/vacum seal kit for our trucks. Once again I was told that this part number is for a piston set! Has anyone ever bought this kit? Who posted it in the tech then misc first gen part numbers? I was told that maybe I was one number off or something! Any help!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, Robert

For the kit, the part number is 4089742. This contains the seals needed for most vacuum pumps, except some 91-93 intercooled trucks, which also need this oring: 3048182. Piece of mind, get the oring too.

I just went through a long hassle with Cummins finding the right parts, and they make one kit for the pumps on 91 and up, except on these particular years.

Fred, thank you so much! The truck that has this leak (currently) is one of my dads 1993's! That Cummins part# is different, just one number off what it says on this website! I will call tomorrow and order both part numbers! An o-ring by itself cant be exspensive! Plus I know before I tear it down I have everything I possibly need! Did you remove the whole thing (vacume pump aswell) together? If so I should get the big gasket for it to the block! Thanks for your help, thats what this website is for! It is greatly appreciated! Thanks again ,Robert

The kit comes with the gasket to the timing cover. I pulled the whole unit off, as I was installing a new PSC pump too.

Maybe someone with fixing authority can go in there and fix the part-number before it causes the same headaches for someone else.

Yes, I went threw my work! We have a corporate account with a Cummins dealer. (We have a 2 Cummins engines, a 4bt in an Onan generator and a 6bt as a HEAVY DUTY water pump for insurance reasons!) It was a simple phone call yesterday morning. And received the seal kit and O-ring this afternoon! Altogether was around $10 plus shipping! Thanks everyone for your help! I wish they would toss the Cummins pump motor! It is identical to out first gen motor except its rated @ 215hp! It doesnt give the tq numbers! Robert

If you can get the CPL # off it I can probably find the torque rating.

Will it be on the little plate on the side of the motor by the injector pump? Thats where the hp rating was. Its in the same location as the plate on our motors! Robert
