power steering pump...

well, mine is starting to leak where the steering shaft comes into it. common problem? just replace with remanufactured one? dealer says, reman. is $100. didnt think that was too bad. let me know what you guys think. thanks in advance.

on a side note, i drove from st. paul, MN to denver, CO (950 miles) and got 15 mpg at 80 mph with a head wind. then drove from denver, CO to bozeman, MT (750 miles) and got 21 mpg at 67 mph. I am impressed, to say the least. Also, noticed at 80 mph my accelerator had nothing left (no more room to depress), so I crimped the throttle cable at the top of the accelerator to take out the slack. much better driveability.

thanks for the help,

Pat

on the slack shorten the rod with the two joints on the end at the pump. the ends also get worn and loose with age. Part # for new ones in the tech section.

Even with it right I max out RPM wise at 90 with mine.

If you want more top speed. Just screw in the high idle screw a little bit. An 1/8" equals about 5mph more. Will be located on the left front side of the pump.

Hi Pat,

Do you mean the steering box?

There's company who sells them 'remanned' on Ebay for a couple hundred bucks...I checked on 'em and they've been in business for like 30 years.

Also, the steering box is the same for all years and models of 1st gen truck. When I thought my lack of power steering was from a "pooched" box, I replaced it with the one from my 1/2 ton 86 parts truck...and it bolted right in.

yes, i am talking about the steering box. and the $100 quote for the reman from the dealer was for a steering box. i will probably do the Borgeson (spelling?) shaft as well. sounds like the dealer price is a good one. thank you for the help everyone.
