I'm about 18 miles North of Washington DC, that's outside the instant kill range of even a fairly large nuke (from the initial blast of course) but i figure it's a pretty popular target. At least there wont be much traffic trying to get away from the radiation if all the modern cars are fried. Just gotta watch out for the hords of nice folks that suddenly think my smokey old diesel should be theirs... They don't call the passenger seat "shotgun" for no good reason.
Amazing book, just finished it...if your open minded in a way you never thought of being open minded, this book is amazing...

National geographic did a kill zone in an issue maybe a year ago where they over layed the Japanese bombs over a DC map. Yes that's old technology, but I "survived" that example.
And find a rifle with a scope on it...
Here's a good article on a "bugout" emergency kit....

They might have guns, and they might try to take my truck, but I doubt they will know a VE well enough to notice my pull cable going up inside the dash. Who needs an alarm? I have a hidden shut off, they can crank that starter all day long
My 3rd gen might not run very well, but I'm guessing the 1967ish JD 4020D will run just fine. It even runs with the switch off
Not very fast, but I don't need to jack it up to power the generator either.

Soviet Mosin-Nagant PU sniper rifles won WW2. You can get repros of these built on pristine 91/30 rifles for under $500, that will put cheap 7.62x54r surplus rounds in the bullseye all day long. At one time this ammo was under 10 cents a round, now it hovers around twenty. Best deal going.
Yeah, there are modern scoped rifles for the same price or less with better optics, chambered in American calibers, but they aren't nearly as indestructible as the Mosin, usually don't have iron sights and they take much more expensive ammo. That extremely high quality, dirt cheap 54r ammo is what makes the PU snipers such a great deal. A peace dividend from the cold war, more or less.
Plus, they were used to win WW2. If they were good enough to beat **** Germany, they are good enough for me...

The only thing on a 1st gen that is emp vulnerable is the voltage regulator, keep a couple spares in a grounded home made faraday cage, you'll be good to go, where is what is debatable. Funny thing, I just recieved 2 mossin nagants from classic arms couple of days ago, 1 round reciever and one hex, even with ffl and shipping they were only about 125 each, they sell the sniper version with original scope, but it's 399 before shipping and ffl. I got savage 338 and luepold for long distance work. mzb's beware!
