Please help!! Injector pump problem/replacement

First off, I will greatly appreciate any help I can get on this subject. I have an 89 cummins truck and fuel is massively leaking out the top of the injector pump and now it wont even start. First question, when removing the injector pump , can i just take it out, or is there marks I need to line up for timing, etc? If so , where are the marks, cause I looked around and didnt see anything. Secondly , do I have to get an injector pump from an 89-91 or will any year work ? I need to get this fixed asap as my truck is 175 miles away stuck! I just dont want to take it out and screw anything up. Thanks alot!!

You might be better to take it to a truck garage. Taking the pump off and reinstalling is very very complicated. If not done correctly, you're pump timing could not be set correctly and cause severe damage to your engine.

I'm sorry I can not help you much, maybe some of the vets could give you more info.

I have it here http://dodgeram.info/tsb/recalls/605.htm good luck! Check your tag, maybe you can get it done by dodge for free if you have the recall pump.

I went outside and checked my tag after reading this thread and I have one of the recall pumps. What are the odds of dodge still replacing this pump after 15 years? Is there a certain time frame these recalls have to be performed in, or can I take my truck into the dealership tomorrow and get a replacment pump?

That is really good news, but it almost sounds too good to be true. Do I need to bring any paperwork in for proof or just drop the truck off?

Print that recall data and take it with you. I should have the recall number on it. They definetely will replace it. -Jim-

Just an update...
I called the dealership and gave them the last 6 digits of my vin# and they told me that the recall had been performed in 1996 on my truck. I know this isnt true because the truck has never been in the shop before in it's entire life (1 owner truck) and it has the number on the plate that was supposed to be one of the pumps recalled. Two different dealerships have told me they cant replace it unless the pump has failed. Is there anything I can do to make them replace this pump? Starting to get a little ticked off. The pump is fine, but it has over 220,000 miles and was supposed to be replaced, but never was...thats what makes me mad.

If you have a 1991 truck built between March and September then I would have it checked out.

This may be a dumb question, but could I have this recall done at Cummins or does it have to be through Dodge?

The problem is not with Dodge, it is with the people you talked with. Take the printout of the recall down there and tell the service advisor that this is a mandatory recall and he HAS to replace it. If he refuses to do so then ask him for a written refusal on company letterhead and explain to him that when the recall pump fails it breaks the throttle shaft which causes the pump to run WFO. Also if they claim the recall has already been done, there were cases of recall pumps being installed by mistake from dealer inventory. The tag on the pump tells it all. If your pump has the bad numbers they have to change it.

If they claim it was done..then have them produce the records...even if the pump itself was sent out to have it RE&RE'd there is a record....this is/was a safety recall not a nuisance recall...
Stick with it..
In my brother's 92 they replace the entire pump with a new one...it was painted different than the original so you couldn't miss the difference.

pb.....keep the faith...
