Question permanent under-hood oil pressure gauge?

Has anyone mounted an oil pressure gauge in the 1/8" NPT port near the oil filter with the intention of the gauge remaining in place indefinitely?

Would the engine vibration destroy the gauge over time? Perhaps a gauge designed for a tractor would withstand the rough service?

I'd like to have a tiny (1" or less in diameter) gauge under my hood if possible. If anyone has done this and could post a photograph it would be appreciated.

TIA.

Unless it was an oil filled gauge that cummins would shake it to death in short order. Even then I couldn't guarantee service length.

If you're putting it in the port that isn't used by the turbo remember that it is technically unfiltered oil, and wouldn't give any indication of a possibly plugged filter

Make sure to use a high quality snubber and it may live

Seems to work fine. It hasn't been there long so I can't speak for longevity but it works. Doesn't seem to bounce much

It's a glycerin filled gauge

you can use a grease gun hose like a hydraulic line
and mount your guage on the inner fender away from the engine

Why not a dash mounted gauge? You don't drive from under the hood. If you were worried about heat use a braded stainless hose like the feed line to the turbo.

I put mine under the hood because I can just have a quick look when I'm under there or if the stock gauge bottoms out I can have a quick look under the hood. Not a big deal. Plus it was only $20. I don't feel like doing the effort to get a gauge in the cab. Plus I don't have the extra money either with all the random crap that keeps going wrong eating up even more money.

Under hood will have to do.

I see your point. I just have this distrust of stock gauges. But at least you know how much oil pressure you have in PSI.

That's why I put it in to begin with. I like to actually see a real world number once in a while. Don't need it all the time so I'll save a few bucks and some time and put it under the hood.

The idiot light works but the stock gauge is pretty lame in pretty much every pickup ever.

I agree, the odds of a 12V having oil pressure problems are low so I didnt waste a space in my three hole guage holder. The important guages I needed in the cab are pyro, boost and water temp.

Rick said it better than I can. My OEM in-dash gauge reads VERY low oil pressure and makes me nervous. (Yes, I already replaced the sender unit to no avail.) I just want to be able to peer under the hood periodically and see that I actually have decent oil pressure (in real PSI numbers). And I don't feel it's worth the mess of adding additional wires or oil lines in the engine compartment to get a gauge into the cab.

Frankly, if I could find small durable unobtrusive gauges (1" diameter or less), it would be great to have both oil pressure and fuel pressure gauges mounted permanently on the engine.

Thanks all.

The ideal location to pick up oil pressure would be from the main oil galley on the driver side of the block. Filtered oil with no chance of plugging up the gauge either. There are 2 - 1/8" NPT ports on the driver side of the block. One of which is where the factory oil pressure switch is already threaded into. The other port is just in front of that. It appears as though it might be difficult to get to for the later i/c motors with the vein style vacuum pumps. But maybe not. If clearance is an issue, you could use the rear-most port and build a "T" in order to install a pressure gauge along with the factory oil pressure switch. From then, just make up a length of hose or tubing to put the gauge where you want it. I think I'll do that this weekend.

As seen in the picture below, the 2nd port is just in front of the factory oil pressure switch.

While this is unrelated, I have a local pressure gauge which reads fuel inlet pressure to the VE (supplied by the Airdog). With the engine off, the needle was steady but as soon as I fired the motor, vibrations made it dance quite a bit. It only lasted a few weeks before it failed. It would register but stick in place after shutting down. Smack it with my hand and the needle would fall to zero. That said, this picture is old and I've since replaced the guage with a liquid filled gauge. The needle doesn't even twitch. I'll take an updated picture this afternoon if anyone cares to see it.

Can't argue with that. If you like your oil pressure gauge you can keep your oil pressure gauge. sorry I couldn't resist

I Do not have an oil pressure gauge but I do have a fuel pressure gauge mounted under the hood. Its a liquid filled and has been on there for many years and is still working. It is mounted to a valve so if it ever does break off I can shut the valve, that is if it breaks on the gauge side of the valve.
