Question perf. mods on rebuilt pump?

Are there any mods that can be done on the high pressure side when being rebuilt to produce more pressure or volume?
I here some talking about a 230hp pump, is this a modified 160hp pump, if so whats done to it? or, is it a completely different pump from another aplication?
My pump has started leaking when cold from the high pressure head where it bolts to the pump body It's probably due for a rebuild anyway (209Kmi). But I want more FUEL
Thanks, Phil

I think most pump guys will add their touches to a pump when they rebuild and/or replace your pump. Most of them know that the pums are certainly capable of more than what the factory sets them at.

Notice I said pump guys, not dealerships or Cummins branches.

royta is right... the pump is rebuilt or purchased new and worked on from there.
Normally if a pump is rebuilt then the thing is "set to spec" and then worked upward from that point so that it flows, for example, another 20%, 30% etc.

If you push a pump much beyond "the max range of spec" then there is a concern that warranty is not available.
The reason is simple on this one... the shop can't send the pump back to Bosch (if it were new to start with) and expect Bosch to support it.... if it was a rebuild then the shop will/should tell you that you are asking them to push it beyond it's "acceptable" limits and you won't get a warranty.

someone told me they got a 230 HP pump from a place in Oregon. So I got the phone number and they told me there was no such thing, so I called another pump shop and they told me the same thing. No 230 HP pumps were ever made according to 2 pump shops.
If you get a new pump I would run it a while, when your pretty sure its a good one then start turning it up.
Good luck

So how is a new/rebuilt pump "set to spec"? I'm sure it's done on a pump stand and output is measured in volume. But how do they adjust it? shims in the high pressure side???

I just want to know if I can buy a pump, or have mine rebuilt, and have the pump shop do some tweaks that I can't (internal on the pressre side). Or is the best I can do is get a stocker and perform the mods a did to my old one(fuel screw,AFC pin, gov spring,ect..)

Thanks for all your help, Phil

I believe that pumps are set to a certain CPL. For instance, my year has a CPL804. When I was broken down last weekend, I spent some time on the phone with a guy who specializes in the Cummins engine and Dodge trucks. He mentioned a CPL1351 was the highest factory flow the Bosch VE would do. His opinion was that it was the best. The outfit who has my truck now, is a Bosch authorized shop, and rebuilds many of the pumps that the local DC uses. If the customer desires, he'll make changes inside for a 20% increase in flow. I can't wait to get the truck back. Cummins won't make changes at all to the pumps. They run your engine number, and the correct rebuilt (by Recon) pump number comes up, and I assume it is preset for your particular CPL. I actually stopped at Cummins West in West Sacramento to see if they had a rebuilt in stock. They ran the engine number, and my particular CPL popped up. So, if you have Cummins do your work, you will leave with a stock pump.

VueDoo - My pump guy prefers to make the changes internally. He prefers an engine that DOES NOT smoke. He can get the same flow, if not more, and do so without smoking everybody out of house and home.

Do they have a website? What's it costing you? When mine gets back on the road, something else is sure to go, preventing me from buying a crew cab body again.

A pump is $900, and I believe he's $75 an hour. I don't think it should take longer than 4 hours. He's very honest and fair. Unfortunately, they haven't even gotten to the change pump part yet. They have found some issues with the exhaust push rods and lifters. I wish there was an easier way to pull the lifters than by pulling the cam. Oh well, what do you do? You just fix it.
