Parking Brake Cables

A never ending saga......career brake job.

The drivers side lost the boot at the equalizer, and both cables lost the clip for the wheel end and were wired to the PB actuator.

I bought a set of rear cables from AutoZoned. Today I pulled the old cables out, and unwrapped the passenger side cable. It has bare inner wire and no boots or anything to seal out the Minnesota road salt. Life expectancy around here would be months in the winter. The passenger side looks OK on that count, but the wheel end clip on it is cheezier than the stock one.

I guess I'll have to put the old cables back in and wire them up.

The short one may be available from Chrysler for about $50. Looks like the long one is NLA.

The pictures at NAPA like the unprotected one mentioned above.

Does anyone make decent replacement parking brake cables?

Yeah I don't like how the cables don't have a protective boot over the end. I have to be very careful in the winter to make sure that the cable does not get water in the end and freeze up. Have had that happen to me more then once.

Nothing like having to lay under the truck in negative degree weather and pour hot water on the cables ends so you can free up your e-brake and get to work at 4am!

I have tried pulling a set of boots from an OEM cable, but could not get them off in good shape, or onto the new cable in decent shape either.

I've got some boots I pulled off a mockup. The cables were made at a local industrial cable place. Think the shop did hyraulics and cables.
Boots were really nice.

It's a bummer on the cable quality or cheapness. I've noticed it too. I got bendix from Rockauto because they would have been OEM?

I could not find any actual products for trucks?

Think we need some body to send in their OEM cables so they can tool up replacements.

I called them they dont have a set for my truck,

They told me to send them a picture of the cable ends to see if they could make a set.

After 2 years of tripping over my old factory cables I threw them in the trash about 3 weeks ago. SB

The CQs I got dont look quite like the OEMs

Ain't that home it always works....

Do they have a boot over the ends that attach to the main e-brake cable? The look wouldn't bother me, but having those boots would sure be a bonus.

About an hour ago I put mine back on the truck. Other truck doesn't have any on it at all.

I ordered the short one from Dodge, about $50. The long one is NLA, and would be about a hundred if they had it.

When I get the short one in about a week, I can measure it up and photograph it. Should be able to deduce the measurements for the long one for that given that the length is known (97.5" ) and the end relationships are the same.

Got to looking around, and from the description Raybestos might be OK.

Left Raybestos BC93587
Right Raybestos BC93876

From the stock photos, Oreilly might be Raybestos

For what it is worth, I have found that the aftermarket cables that are plastic coated (inner cable) perform very poorly. The plastic is too soft, and wads up inside the sheath, and then the cable doesn't release. Rust also penetrates under the coating -- if the assembly lasts that long.

Think it was one of our member...Bearkiller?...who mentioned that he soaks the cables in a bucket of used oil for a few days before installing them. It allows the oil to penetrate throughout the assembly. I have done this myself and it seems to work well? I have the plastic case cables with the inner plastic coated cable on my truck now for about 5 years.

I think the problem with using those is getting the small end over the ball on the end of the E-brake cable without tearing it. That was the issue I was having, but that could be due to old rubber parts....the new units might be more pliable.
