Paint from hell?

Anyone else have their paint just falling off their truck? I have a white 92, and I know I'm going to need to repaint this, does it all need to be stripped off to successfully repaint it?

It's finally getting bad enough that I'm thinking of having it done this winter. I'll have to pull the flatbed off to get it done right... ugh!

Most 1st gen dodges I have seen have paint peeling off of them. The bright side to your situation is that you only have to paint the Cab.
And yes you will have to strip all the paint to keep the paint that you put on from falling off.

There are 2 other first gens near me. One is an '89 and I don't know what the other one is. They look like junk - lots of peeling. Mine is pretty good except for the hood and roof, which are toast!

I think Dodge was using teflon primer in the early '90's.

Ok, well the previous owner had had the hood and roof repainted already and when I bought the truck it looked great. Now everything but the hood and roof looks like crap!

Three years (I think it was) after buying my '93 new, the paint of the roof and hood was checking badly. I had a fit with the dealer about three year new paint going to stinky . . . . . warranty or not.

The dealer agreed to split the cost of repainting the roof and hood with me. . . .

As woodrat said "Now everything but the hood and roof looks like crap!" The drivers door, below the window and upper edges of both the outer front fenders have gone to stinky.

My paint was at a point where this last spring I took off my flat bed and sleeper. removed anthing I could - including the windshield which needed to be replaced. I then took it down and had it sanded and repainted at Maaco. I couldn't afford the other shops and the only complaint I was hearing from others locally about Maaco was that they did not removed things like bumpers, side markers, mirrors and the like, and thier mask job of those things wasn't the best. I felt they did a pretty good job of the Cab. After I cleaned up the sleeper - they painted that for me. I just rolled a coat on my flatbed as it gets abused regularly.

The point is - in order to fix it, it needs to be sanded, reprimed and painted...

Check the pics in my gallery... I am pleased...

Best wishes on your 'winter' project.

Before with bed off

After with bed and sleeper on

All of Mothers paint was bad around that time. I heard it was because they removed all the lead from the primer.

Seems there was something amiss in general as they all had clear-coat failures.

Yeah all of the big 3 had problems with it. Its the primer or the E-coat they put on the car I can't remember exactally. Back years ago when our 88 Caravan had that paint falling off problem the body shop that quoted the work said that it had to go down to bare metal. Thats probally the best way or give it a good run for its money with some 80 grit on the DA and then epoxy primer it. Mother was willing to pay 2/3 of the cost at the time.

I only buy American, but this is an embarassment.
I had a 4K paintjob on my truck and now the UV from the altitude is stripping off the clear coat and has made it down to the pigment on the hood and top. I'm totally stressed about it because I can't afford another color sanded paint job, but it's the only thing I would be happy with.
I think I am going to have to try the micro roller job. Wish I was 10 years younger though....

I have a 1990 Mazda MPV in white that is doing the same thing. It's like the paint just slowly falls right off of the primer.

I just ran into someone I hadn't seen since I had just bought the truck three years ago. he said something about how why did I get rid of that other nice truck that i used to have and replace it with this one? I told him that I hadn't... it's the same rig. Granted, it was pretty filthy with mud and what not and the bed covered with cable and tools and junk. but still... !

I need to find another driver's door shell too while I am at it since this one is all cracking and falling apart around the lower hinge and the door doesn't close properly anymore.

Mines starting too flake as well. I`ve had the suede hood/roof since I got it, but this past summer it started to flake off on the bed. Heck even the clear on the bedsides is looking ratty. Just hope to make it thru the winter without too much carnage and then its

My 91 has had the doors & bed sides redone before I got it (dads work). The silver on the fenders is peeling off now. The truck is too nice to just leave it.

By the time I scrapped it my 88 caravan had almost no paint left . . . it left paint flakes everywhere.
