It should, the P-pump has a sound of its own, its like a little diesel on the side of your diesel

If it doesn't, then the timing is set too retarded.

Nice write up and pictures. It's kind of hard to explain what a p-pump is like to a ve pump owner. You don't need as much injector with a p-pump either, so they can make more power and run cleaner on the bottom end.

With plenty of timing and a 4k GSK I'd describe it as "vicious".

Is there a rpm diffrence between the ve and the p-pump engines? The reason I'm asking is when I did my fordcummins conversion my A518 decided to puke out the OverDrive. When I ordered my transmission they sent me a A618 with lockup. After getting the adapter plate, starter and toggle switches in place of the computer I noticed that I have a max speed of maybe 50 in third and 75 in overdrive. It seems like theres not enough rpm for this tranny to go faster unlike the 518. I was able to do easy 80mph with the 518. transmission.

I kept the gear ratio as close to stock as I could between the two trucks. Dodge had 3.73 and the ford has 3.55. And instead of 20mpg I'm getting only 16 now.

A stock P-pump will not spin as fast as a stock VE, the governor is much more responsive and shuts you down quicker. Put a 3k GSK in it. The 4k kit is fun but very twitchy.

It's a function of the governor more than the capabilities of the pump. The P-pump governor is very complex and precise - a VE governor looks like it was stolen out of a Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine.

sgreen, tell us what ,mileage difference you see, since everything else is the same.
What pump did you start with, I don't recall seeing in the thread.

Having both pumps, there's no comparison in getting power per $ out of a ppump vs a VE.

Im using a 180hp pump, I still getting bout 20mpg on the highway, even with the nasty 370s(thus the reason for custom injectors, lol). Should get a bit of a milage bump when the timing gets bumped, just depending on how well i can keep my foot out of it with the bigger injectors, lol. Power is no comparrison, I only have bout $1100.00 bucks in the p-pump swap itself so it is well worth the time and cost so far.
