picked up an upper engine gasket set from cummins.

PN 4089649 | $213.20

i've never seen some of these smaller parts. i called cummins asking if they could name off the individual parts. they faxed me 2 lists.

if in fact, the valve stem seals are the blue tip pieces, there were only 10 in the bag. hmmm, the parts list clearly says there should be 12.

Well, . . . .

- head gasket (1)
- Valve cover gaskets (6)
- Valve cover bolt O-rings (6 - thin rubber)
- Exhaust manifold gaskets (6)
- Valve stem seals (6)
- Intake log cover-plate (1 big rectangular gasket)
- Grid heater housing and intake feed-horn (2 - 3" square gaskets)
- Fuel injector return line (6 - U shaped copper gasket things)
- Fuel injector seals (6 dime sized copper washers)
- Fuel injector sleeve (6 thin rubber square-cut O-rings maybe 1" diameter)
- Exhaust manifold to turbo exhaust housing (1 - 3" x 4" thin metal gasket)
- Thermostat housing O-ring (1 - Rubber, stepped on one side)

Did I miss anything?

only 6 valve stem seals? you sure? the parts list they faxed me says there should be 12 valve stem seals. makes sense since there's 12 valves in our trucks, right? i only have 10. time to call cummins... again...

When you got this kit was there an option for the 0.0020 head gasket, or did you ask?
Thanks
Justin

i believe i read somewhere that 10 (.010") or 20 (.020") over gaskets are available. i remember asking, but i can't recall if they said they were an option or not. i'm going back tomorrow to make sure i get all the parts i need this time around. i'll ask about a 20 over gasket for you and get a price, if it varies with the thickness.

if the head is distorted and needs to be machined, that's when the 10 or 20 gaskets are needed to retain the proper compression ratio, right?

Yes, or if you are running big injectors and lots of timing and want to drop the compression half a point.

Jimbo,

I cannot offer any specific information about your project but you are obviously in good hands. What I can offer you is moral support and a second set of hands. Depending where you are in OC I am probably only 45 minutes away or so. Please, let me know if you need either of the above anytime. I can also swing through Long Beach for example to pickup something you might need on the way. Always up for "hands on learning" and helping a brother out.

the offer is very appreciated. thank you! i'll let you know if a second or third set of hands would help out. my dad wants to help me with it, but he works days with rotating days off. we'll see how things work out and i'll be in touch with you if i/we need some assistance. it will definitely be a good learning experience. thanks again.

93flatbed, i asked the guys at the parts counter about a 10 or 20 over gasket and they said that they only have standards in their kits. at this point, not sure where to go for one.
