Overfilling a Gutbag
Hey thanks for the info fellers..but hey this turned into a good post
What exactly would yall say would be the best weight of oil to use? I'm probably going to use Lucas fully synthetic oil or Mobil 1 possibly. Now just would like to know what would be suggested weight. Thanks

In the years previous to the Dodge/Cummins/Getrag, Corvette used a six-speed Getrag in some models.
I don't know how much truth is in this; but, I have also been told that the five-speed we have shares many parts in common with the six-speed that Corvette used.
I despise anything
Corvette, so know very little about them.Maybe someone more familiar can enlighten us on this.
The one on the right is a 60 PSI boost gauge, as you can almost see
it's at 30 PSI.
Hard to focus at 85 mph and keep breathing
but bored.59

Sorry for the wordy dird about the Getrag :P
When you say 5w30 that would be a motor oil correct? I understand the fact to overfill it. Most everyone puts FIVE(5)quarts in the tranmission RIGHT? I just figured for sure the transmission would hold GEAR oil. 5w30 sounds really thin to be putting in a transmisson but maybe I'm completely stupid. Just wanting to make sure before I up and buy 5 quarts of 5W30 to go into it. Would it be a bad thing to add the synthetic Lucas Oil Additive in the transmission also? Everything I've ever owned I've put Lucas in and love it but want to make sure cause everyone seems real particular about these transmissions.
Again sorry for the bad topic name. I've just never heard anything but bad about them and heard the name and it sorta stuck with me :P

Whatever you do, DON'T put gear oil in it. And I would not recommend the Lucas under any circumstances, either. That Lucas stuff is an anti-oxidant stabilizer designed for motor oil in motors. Tranny is a whole different beast.
The Getrag is a synchromesh-type gearbox which uses either a motor oil-type or even ATF viscocity level fluid in cold weather. The boutique oil companies (Amsoil, RP, ec.) have greatly improved on the "motor oil for tranny fluid" concept lately. Motor oil isn't the greatest thing for it, but that's the best they could do back in the early nineties. The Dodge owner's manual even says ATF (which runs around a 20-weight viscosity) is better in cold weather. Motor oil has some additives that aren't needed and could even detract from gearbox performance. Feel free to experiment.
Some people are having success running heavier synthetics (Syntorq, straight 50W), but I doubt they are doing it in cold weather, or daily communting-type driving. Pennzoil has relatively inexpensive synchromesh fluid, but I've never seen it on the shelf anywhere. Royal Purple Synchromax or the Amsoil equivalent are the best thing out there for it today if you can get it for less than $10 a quart. There are some other lesser know boutique brands, but they are pretty much all in the same category: Synchromesh.
I love my "rag."
