Question OK, so convince me on Amsoil

I have driven truck for 30 years and always run Shell oil, also run it in my pickup. It has treated me very well over the years and have never had one that used oil. I see most guys on here swear by Amsoil in everything. Convince me to switch.

I run it in my 06, thinking of switching back to rotella. I feel all modern oils are similar. Just depends what you grow partial too..

Not worth the price unless you follow the extended drain intervals. Then it can actually save you money

I run the Shell Rotella in 8 trucks and would be hard to convince to change. I've lost 1 engine in 9 years but that was due to the drain plug coming out. Stupidity yes but it happens. But after the engine threw 2 rods broke the oil pan almost off and the starter laying on the ground with 2 holes in the block you could almost stick your head in, the engine kept running, the driver was unloading and didn't notice what had happened till it caught on fire. The truck has set for 2 years now and will still turn over by barring it. I'd be hard to convince to change. I've never run Amsoil but it's probably good from all the input I hear on it.

Very true. I'm an oil ****, I buy whatever name brand diesel oil happens to be cheapest at the time. Mobil has been giving a $3/gallon rebate recently so that's what I have been running. I will run Rotella T when it's the cheapest, but I don't like the way it stinks.

A good point, and valid with any synthetic - not just Amsoil. The only exception is if you live in the frozen North and can't plug the truck in. Then synthetic is worth the money due to easier starting and quicker cold flow.

One very important thing we should not forget is that none of our old tried and trusted oil friends are what they used to be.

If the API specs say CJ4 on the jug anywhere, I am not pouring it in my engine.

There is no reason for me to go into a five-page explanation of what that means, as there are many discussions on the subject scattered all over the "net".

I can't remember where I read it, but a scientific analysis showed even plain old Walmart-brand 15W-40 Universal Diesel Oil CI4 to have a higher concentration of goodies in it than any of the new CJ4 oils.

Suffice it to say that ONLY CI4 rated oils will be in my engine and never CJ4, regardless of brand-name on the jug.

BK- I hate to rain on your parade, but even Wally World oil is now CJ4. About the only CI4 I've been able to find has been the farm store private label oil. Sometimes you can get big name SAE 30 in a CH4.

There was a write up in some magazine a few years ago, saying that the oil company experts claim that though the new oil may have less of the old goodies, the fact of it being a better base stock protects the engine just as well or better, or some BS to that effect. I'm going 6k on my changes, and it's good old Mystic JT8 (JT7?- one is for grease, the other is oil) til they succomb to peer pressure and go CJ4.

I run mine 25k... Change the full flow filter every 5k and add make up oil....

About 100k of my 121k have been done in this method... I tried going back to dino oil somewhere in the middle as I was going to start filtering the used oil and putting it back in the tank and just changed my mind when I could not find CI4 any longer.

I used to run the Mystic brand oil 15w50 but several years back it got to where nobody around here carried it. That's when I went to Rotella 15w40. Anyways this is kinda like the question which came first the chicken or the egg arguement everybody has a favorite.

As long as you change your cj-4 oil out at 3,000 miles, there will be no problems.. You just can't run extended drain intervals on the cj-4 stuff..
