Nv4500 swap
Nv4500 swap
Does anyone know how much trouble it would be to swap to an NV 4500 transmission from a 3-speed automatic in an '89 model Dodge? Am I way out of line for even thinking about it?? I have heard that it can be done but I am at a loss. Any information you all migh have would be greatly appreciated.
i know it has been done ,
i have done the getrag to nv4500 swap i think most of that would be the same but not sure i have a lot of pictures if you want me to e-mail them to
you p.m. me you email address

I was also thinking about a 4500 swap, until I decided that I may get a different pickup in a few years, so I will just replace the torque converter. You will probably need a clutch petal out of a pre-94 model pickup. The rest of the parts will need to be taken from a 94+ Dodge with the NV4500. They include a clutch slave and master cylinder, bellhousing, flywheel, adaptor plate, starter, clutch assembly, and probably a few other things that I cannot think of right now. One real problem is that the NP205 transfer case behind the automatic has a 23 spline input, while the Getrag and NV 4500 have a 29 spline output shaft. A 205 behind a Getrag could be used, or the 23 spline 'case could be machined out to allow a 29 spline input. One other thing to consider is a light duty NV4500, since it has a 23 spline output shaft. However, this transmission is only a good idea if power levels remain around stock. This webpage pretty much reiterates what I just typed. It is a good guide to this project, but you may save considerably more money by getting parts elsewhere.

It is a difficult project, but worth it if you can spend the time and money. Good luck!
