When did they start using NV 4500's? I thought '94 was the first year.

Ya 94 was the first year but they have adaptor kits to put a nv4500 on your Gen 1 cause the Gentrag is Garbage. I am on my second gentrag after 100,000 miles

 

I hear that if you are a total Getrag guru you can make one live, but you have to set all the bearing preloads perfectly, possibly drill extra oil holes and for sure over fill the box. But that won't fix the 2nd to 3rd gear gear spacing BOG. I love my NV4500. I'd rather have an automatic that a Getrash!
