NP205 weakness

i figured i would let you guys know about this, we have managed to break 2 output shafts on 205's this year, one chevy slip yoke 205 and one fixed yoke ford 205, one sheared off smooth and the other cracked severely, these are both in 475 horsepower gas pulling trucks, all you truck pulling guys should check yours for drag or slop, if your lucky it will shear off smooth like in the chevy and all that happens is you lose rear wheel drive, the ford one was dragging some so we tore it apart and it was cracked around the base of the shaft, above the gear, gear should of spun freely, it was locked tighter than a bulls butt, one more hard clutch drop and it would of grenaded big time. just thought id share that lovely little piece of information with you guys. the only thing saving you 5 speed guys is that you break the input shaft on the tranny before the t-case.

I have wheeled for quite a while and have yet to see a 205 break, with one exception of a loose ujoint strap. I guess the shock load of a pulling truck could be catastrophic to it.

I am getting ready to take the 5600 out of my '92 and put in a 47rh. I am a bit concerned about how the 205 will hold up to my power level. I would like to get into the 12's, but am a bit leary of the boosted launches in 4wd. Was hoping I might be able to get away with 2wd and a bit slower 60ft times.

Isn't the shaft break due to the gas motor launch and dropping the clutch where in a diesel it is more build the boost then let it go ? the 205's are said to be bullett proof .I am not knocking the gas trucks but are the diesel's as hard on the t case as the gasser's are ?.

diesels are putting twice the torque to the ground as those gas motors are, the thing is that bouncing broke the shaft in the chevy, we rarely if ever come off hard with that truck, the ford on the other had, it has come off hard a few times, most of the dodge guys around us are harder on there trannys than we are, they just build boost and light the tires, no slip of the clutch at all, over the last 3 or 4 years ive seen alot of busted 205's or more, chevy and ford, not very many older dodge gas/diesel trucks pull with us so there numbers are lower, we will probably just step up to this at the end of the year: http://www.profabmachineinc.com/muncie.html with there single speed 205 kit behind it. there is several guys running them and they are almost bullet proof. there is only 1 transfercase that has never broke, and that is http://www.scsgearbox.com/default2.a...ve_page_id=101 and they are built like a brick outhouse and cost alot of money.

I actually broke the "input" shaft off as smooth as glass on my 92 with an auto. If you do this you can expect to pay 260.00 dollars for the input shaft alone. Yes building boost at the line can break the bullet proof 205.
