Yeah, sweet. I wonder what the gasser 4x4 drivetrain options were back then? The 440s were pretty stout motors.

Using the flag as a bed cover is not a good idea. It's also illegal.

So true...but not intentional I'm sure. Few people are ever aware of the rules/statutes on flag usage, maybe brought on by the 'Easy Rider'(the movie not the mag) generation? I was appalled(and still am!) that The Supreme Court could decide flag desecration was within the Constitution ...almost ranks with the disbelief felt when the McDonald's shootings occurred in San Leandro, CA. The last vestige of safety in this country was harshly erased by that incident - I mean I already knew you couldn't feel safe in shopping malls, schools, or even a church, but if you can't feel safe at *McDONALD'S*, for crying out loud - there is no safe haven left!! 'Cept for your own home(and increasingly now your own car, but that's another rant...) BTW, how goes Coffeyville presently, Edwin?

Amen to what Edwin and 92 said!

But I will give the guy a half a point for at least presenting the flag properly, with the union on the left. (BTW, the union is the blue part with all the stars in it, for all those unedumacated about flag etiquette!) Some people just don't get it!

Oh yeah, It was an awesome truck!

Technically it's not illegal to have the flag on his truck like that, because there is no penalty for violation of the flag code. It is not "law," merely guidance intended to ensure proper respect for the flag.

However, United States Code. Title 18, Chapter 33, Section 700, regards criminal penalties for flag desecration.

I stand corrected to a degree, and appreciate you pointing out the somewhat less-than-obvious definition...'technically' though, it IS illegal still, as Federal laws DO exist about proper flag display...but ALSO; just as you mention, there are no prescribed penalties, so it becomes a case of you say tomahto, I say tomato I suppose! :-) Ah, but be aware the caveat these same Federal laws DO allow individual states to set penalties for improper display/treatment of the US flag, though it's doubtful it's ever enforced except extreme cases. It is plainly stated in the Federal Statutes I linked below the laws are to be used by private citizens voluntarily to exercise proper care and respect in displaying the flag at all times. You'll find it addressed directly in

(QUOTE)...Title 4 United States Code:

Subsection 7. Position and Manner of Display
(a) The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle or of a railroad train or boat. When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff should be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender...(QUOTE)

Further, the second paragraph of the second page reads:

(QUOTE)...All the states, at one time or another, have enacted laws relating to the United States flag. Even though the Federal Flag Code does not provide penalties for certain conduct or may not govern certain practices, state law may do so. Therefore, it is advisable to consider applicable provisions of state law, as well as federal law, on questions of proper use of the flag...(QUOTE)

All this to prevent possible soiling/damage should the flag dislodge and come into contact with the ground or moving objects. Obviously in the pics above, the person intended no physical harm to the flag, and probably caused none, so almost certainly they would never be accused of desecration of any sort. Back to the original statement Edwin and I both made, due to those same Federal laws, it would be 'illegal' to drape the flag over the hood, top, or back of any vehicle, though just as correct would be your own statement(in so many words) proving it contains no penalties. I can't imagine anyone getting upset over the above pics though, right? Push comes to shove, I'd err on the side of respect for the flag and personally not choose to display it in such a manner, but that said, on the other hand I certainly wouldn't confront the person about doing so either. Anyways, the following link will make for some very good reading for those who have not been exposed to the details, enjoy!! :-)

According to the grille, its a 86-90 model. The last year for the 440 was 78. Available engines were slant six, 318, and 360.

You may want to brush up on your mopar knowledge as well. That grille is also available on the 1990 model trucks.
