non-commercial towing endorsement

I tow my boat and trailer regularly and I have trailer insurance from my Boat US membership.

I also tow utility trailers for my daughter's rowing program. I don't own these trailers, the programs do.

She's now rowing for her school, and the school insures the trailer only when it's stationary.

They require volunteer parents (like me) to prove that our vehicle insurance will cover the trailer while it's in tow.

I called Nationwide (my insurer) and my agent (who is a bit of a moron) told me that a towing endorsement to my policy wasn't available. Boat US only insures trailers that I own (with boats on them). AAA only covers my vehicles, so that's out.

Who knows about non-commercial towing endorsements?

From what I understand if you borrow something from some body and your in possession of it your insurance cover's it as long as it's hooked to your vehicle ? it's kinda like when you rent a Uhaul your insurance cover's it ?

I guess you'll have to waste an hour or so and actually read the insurance policy. Likely non-owned attached equipment will be covered, and there will be a limit to the liability. You need to know what it is.

the Nationwide agent told me that the trailer would NOT be covered by my insurance while under tow

it seems that GEICO and Progressive both offer towing endorsements, but not clear whether the coverage only applies to a trailer that you OWN

That would be unusual. Read it for yourself. You already stated he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

clarification from Nationwide

IF my truck had comprehensive/collision (which it doesn't), then the trailer would be covered for damage it caused to people or property while under tow. the trailer itself would only be covered for $500 (and nothing for the contents)

If you only have liability insurance on the truck, I would expect that to cover damage to other people or property in the event of an accident. If you had comp/collision, then I would expect the insurance to cover your truck and towed vehicle up to the limits of the comp/collision coverage.

You shouldn't need comp/collision to cover damage to others caused by the trailer as a result of an accident.

More proof your agent isn't the brightest light in the fixture. Damage caused to others is covered by liability.

I'll never deal with Nationwide again. When I wrecked the Chevy they needed a payoff amount to be able to put a value on the truck for me. If it weren't for the Percoset I was on for the pain from the blood clots in my leg, I might have caught it in time to keep them from trying to push me into buying their "gap" insurance.
