Hi again, my dads 92 Dodge cummins is making a rattling noise and then a couple of weeks ago it started to make a humming\grinding\vibration noise also, we thought it might be the throw out bearing and replaced it but it still makes it. the rattle is here with or with out the clutch pushed in the other noise happens after 5 or so miles down the road and it's not constant comes and goes. not sure what else to describe. any thoughts would be appreciated.

 

check the oil level in the trans also change it and over fill 1 quart , if that dont help you might have a bearing going

 

already done that when we done the swap into the cc and just drained and refilled oil looked brand new. If a bearing is going which one is more prone to going out and is there one in the back that you can get to with out pulling the trans? Thanks

 

I am sure if I post wrong here that someone will correct me, but I believe the trans has to come out to replace any of the bearings. I believe they are pressed in. My guess would be a bearing too, probably the rear one.

Also, just because you put in a new TO bearing, doesnt mean the one you put in was any good. I went down that road before..... although it doesnt sound as if the TO bearing was/is the cause.

 

I'm sure its not the to bearing because we packed more grease in there than what was there from factory and it made the noise like always. the old one didn't even feel that bad. It seems to vibrate and make the noise when the rattle is there and it makes the noise in 4th or 5th going down the road but it doesn't do it long enough to see if it does it with the clutch disengaged or engaged. I do know the rattle is there either way. and it seems to me the rattle and the noise\vibration is linked. the rattle wasn't there till we done the swap and the rattle has been there for over 10k miles the noise just started a few weeks ago. we may just drive it till it gets worse and we can pin point it better. I beleive its in the trans but the noise it makes sounds like a dry bearing and it vibrates your foot i wouldn't think it would make that noise in the trans since it's oiled. Could a u-joint cause that noise? sorry if its hard to follow i'm thinking out loud again lol

 

It would be worth a try to change out the universals. I had a vibration in mine from 36-46 and changed the universals and all is well now. Only about 20 a piece, and I bought precesion with the greaseable fittings. NAPA # 330 I think was the #. Thats about all I think I can help you out with. Keep us updated on what , how things are going....so we all can benefit from it.

 

well sorry for the delay we were on vacation for a week. we finally figured it out. dad was greasing the ujoints and found the shield by the carrier bearing on the drive shaft was broke off and was causing the rattle which lead us to the other noise which was a bad carrier bearing. lol so we took care of the rattle and the vibration noise. works good now. thanks guys
