New Turbo Install

Well I bought a Truck (92 W250) and I will take delivery of it on the 11th of next month. I also bought a trubo ( turbo ) because I know the stock turbo has horrible lag. What gaskets am I going to need to do this swap? Also what are the specs for the bolts? I want to replace them when I put the new turbo on.

Thanks

Congrats on the new toy. And welcome to the group. You will need the metal gasket that goes between the turbo and the manifold. I dont know what the torque is. I just get them good and tight.Have fun with the new adventure.

Also the gasket for the oil drain tube. You'll like the 12cm housing of the WH1C, and it should sing pretty good too.

I found the part# for the oil return but I can't find the part# for the gasket. Can someone help me out with that?

The oil return...gasket? That is the one you really need (at least I did). I was able to reuse the metal one on the exhaust housing/manifold. The oil feed line is a flared or compression fitting with an O-ring, so that was reuseable too.

When you remove the turbo, if the metal gasket is not brittle, cracked, or doesn't fall apart when you handle it, I would reuse it. If it looks like it's got a million miles on it and has seen some heat and has some damage, replace it. It's not a cheapy either from Cummins, ~$10ish. If you have a Cummins distributor nearby, just take your engine serial number in with you and they'll fix you up.

Bill, I paid $2.56+ tax from Cummins about a month ago for one.

The Dodge dealer can get you both gaskets for a total cost of around $5. Lie to the parts man and tell him it's for an '01. That will make his life easier and you'll get the parts.

Get the nuts about as tight as you can get them with a combination wrench. There's no way you're getting a torque wrench in there.

Thanks for the responses! I Wish I didn't have to wait so long to get the truck! Turbo should be here Monday though, so I will have something to look at until the truck get's here.

Well the turbo is installed but I have a problem. The v band clamp for the exhaust isn't wide enough. The down pipe and the exhaust flange will not fit in the channel in the clamp. Any idea where I can get a different clamp?

Thanks,

If it's the stock clamp it will fit.

If you don't have the downpipe and turbo aligned perfectly the clamp will not work. Could this be your problem?

The flange on the turbo new turbo is definetly wider than the old turbo. I still am not sure what vehicle this turbo is off of. The only thing holset could tell me is that it is for a 6BTA. It doesn't match part numbers for any year Dodge CTD. Right now we have the clamp on (kind of) and I am able to drive it but I am worried it is going to come loose.

Take a belt sander to the turbo flange.

These guys have clamps, but I don't think they will be much different.

Most truck shops have the wider V-Band clamps... There is also a few different angles of the exhaust flange.. but most will work...

I went to every truck shop in town (except Cummins. They are only open mon-fri) and they didn't have anything smaller than 3". I will try Cummins tommorow and see what they say. I might have to go the belt sander route.
