running out of fuel?

How much fuel pressure do you guys have with the hammer down? I'm running a piston pump, big banjos, and the little VE is really cranked up. The fuel pressure is about 13-14 PSI at hot idle(with a new filter), 12 psi at cruise, but when I put the coals to it and hold it there the pressure drops to 3-5 PSI. Is this ok?

I would like to get a lot more fuel when the load is not so high, I have this other "custom" AFC spring here, but wonder if the fuel pin staying down longer will run it dry.

Mine idles at 16 psi, highway cruise is the same. Full load it drops to 8 psi. Yours sounds a little low, but not out of the range of what is reasonable. You might try getting a rebuild kit for the pump, that will have a new pressure spring.

You will not hurt the VE, it's OK as long as you have positive pressure. There is reason to believe that the case pressure will not be high enough to give you full advance, though. Greg and Bill are working on this from two different angles.

I wonder if the lift pump was not right from the beginning. It was ticking and the fuel cap vacuum vent seemed to be the culprit. Then again the in tank strainer might be plugged with debris from all the miles. All I know is that these PODS don't smoke that bad after the initial blackout. But I can still see a swirling blackness at 100+ MPH.

I found this on Geno Garage...wonder where this pressure is checkd at?

Fuel Pressure: 18-24psi at idle, 28-36 at 2000 rpm with no load

Mopar2ya, if you have the stock diaphragm lift pump 9 psi is very healthy. The pressure reading you found at Geno's is from a 2nd gen 12 valve. Stillsmokin and myself are running a low pressure piston lift pump.

Stillsmokin, I think you ought to get the rebuild kit and at least replace the spring, see how that goes.

I'll call out for another pump in the A.M. as It would be wise to have a spare one on hand as these aren't readily available. I'll tear down the old one after the pulls and see what happened. Who knows it could have scored the bore and isn't rebuildable!
