New Truck, Blown 727
New Truck, Blown 727
Hey guys,
I got my "new" truck this week - 89 W-350 SRW rustbucket with no motor and a 727 with no reverse. I bought this truck from member Mainer, and he said that the truck had no reverse when he bought it for the motor. I took the transmission and case out this weekend and the fluid was nice and red. Looks like a fresh rebuild.
Could this just be a broken band? Also, do reverse and 1st gear share the same band on these?
What are the main differences between the 2wd 727 and the 4wd 727 transmissions? The 727 in my 89 D-250 that I wrecked on Valentines day was rebuilt about 10k miles ago. Can I use this transmission? I seem to remember the output shafts being different. Can they be swapped? What do you guys think my options are?
There's pics in my gallery of the teardown this weekend - the body was absolute junk. Now if it would only warm up enough for paint to stick to the frame
Thanks to everyone for all their help and for making this site so useful!

If all the other gears worked, it's either the band or the servo that applies it, or possibly just a valve body issue. The low/reverse band is only applied in the L/1 position, it provides engine braking. In 1st gear in Drive, the 1st gear sprag is what holds.
You can swap output shafts and use your old trans if you want. Get a FSM or a 727 book and a trans reseal kit.
