Question 727 transmission:

Does anybody out there know what is ment by "727 auto modified" This is what it says on the ID tag under the hood of my beast. I have 300,000k miles on it and I was wondering what is modified since it lasted so long? It has the heavy duty trans cooler under the bed with the fan on it and I am wondering if this was something for the towing package. When it does go out, is there any of rebuilding it and adding some way to electrically lock up the torque converter so I can use an exhaust brake with it?
Also what are your thoughts on the Gear Vendor over/ under? I have a 3.0 diff. Thanks Jim.

Not really sure what is meant by modified. But I will say the 727 is the best auto tranny that chrysler ever built

My tranny cooler that was under the bed sprung a leak so I just took it out because I don't really pull anything but my big **** with the truck. My tranny is still strong at 189k and the engine has been turned up for 40k or better.

My dads has done good as well. around 200K miles the 1st gear band broke so we just pulled it and had it rebuilt. Much cheaper than rebuilding an OD as well. Was only $800 and they did the R&R.

unless it was designed as a lock up unit it cannot be done. The unput shaft on a lockup is hollow so you can supply oil to do it, the non lockups are a solid input shaft.

There is no lockup capability with the 727s. The gear venders od would really help your economy however they arnt cheap. Unfortantly there arnt alot of options without spending a small fortune. You could swap to a second gen tranny with lockup or get a stick. But youd face two problems with that, one being it would cost and two youd need to regear your diffs. 3.08 diffs and nv4500 give you a nice topend of around 130mph give or take.

non-lockup 727s can very easily be converted to lock ups have done it many times. the pieces will inter change. havent done it in a diesel but it looks like it could be done

Jug head, which parts do you use? the 80's lockup 727's or switch the 518/618 guts into the 727 case so you have the electronic lockup option? How do you cut the hole in the 727 case?

used lockup valvebody, front pump, inputshaft and rear clutch drum, early 727s used hydraulic tq lockup circuit. only problem i had was it would lockup at full throttle at about 45-50 mph. aint good with high torgue of ctd. of course lockup converter. brain getting slower and slower hope i didnt leave out any steps.

No it is only 140 amps, but it can put out 85 amps @ idle. I work all hours and run an inverter in the shell, I don't like not being able to start. I have 2 cranking batteries and 1 8-D deep cycle in the back. The little ND they come with was not reliable. I used an adjustable regulator but it kept burning out my headlamps (another project) so I did some research and found I could install the engine on the alternator. I can also swap back if I need to in the field. It is a Leece Neville 110-555 OTR unit. If you take Hwy. 39 (Beach Blvd) North over the hill, I live about 5 miles from the base of the mountains. Jim.

One of the first things that I planned on doing was to get a more substancial alternator on my truck when I started business with it. Once I got past the PCM charging system and put a seperate regulator on the truck, I have not had problems. I have replaced three head light bulbs in 305,000 miles. My charge rate is lower than the stock setup and I have burned up one alternator, the brushes wore out.

Im sure your inverter puts a bit of a load on the the electrical system. When i go offroading im paranoid about not being able to start especially when im alone, not sure if any jeep cjs could jumpstart me, nor do i ever wish to find out. I have a dual optima setup in my truck red for starting and yellow for radios and the 400watt inverter in my shell. I have some issues with the stock charging system, i dont like how it fluctuates a little at idle. Then after seeing other peoples problems i suppose im just picky. Any snow still on those hills?
