New noise. turbo bearings?
New noise. turbo bearings?
My truck has started making a funny noise recently. The starting ocurring only after the truck had been driven for 10-15 minutes. Now the time has slowly reduced to the point where it only takes 3-4 minutes to start making it. It happens between 3-5lbs of boost and can be clearly heard after the lifting off. I hear the normal shssshh of the boost bleeding off and then whoooww. Kinda like an owl. Its getting louder.
Any ideas?

Start with your intercooler boots and clamps. Like Pastor Bob says, roll the boots between your thumb and forefinger like you're rolling a smoke. I would suggest removing the boots entirely to be sure you don't miss any cracks. Check your air intake as well. Pretty much the same rules apply-check for cracks and/or loose clamps. As for the turbo bearing, after the truck has been warmed (and shut off!) there should not be enough side to side play to let the impeller touch the housing when gently pushed toward it. I don't think that's your problem, but it's a quick and easy check. Good luck and keep us posted!

There should also be no, zero, in and out play in the turbo shaft whether it is warm or cold. And even when the turbo is cold you should not be able to make the impellors touch the compressor housing.
I didn't notice any thrust play when I had it out. The noise is changing more. Now its kinda developed a whistle at the end. I'm starting to think boost leak too.
How much do new boots cost and where can I get them?
