New injectors

Well I got the new 190's installed tonight. My flexable slide hammer injector puller wasn't up to the challenge all by itself. I think the injectors were the originals. It was like pulling eye teeth. Three popped right out. But numbers 1,3 and 6 required the assistance of a pry bar and the slide hammer to do the job. the hammer loses too much impact to the flex shaft and it is difficult to keep everything straight but it worked better than expected on number six. I didn,t have to pull the hood.

The new injectors ran smooth after I got the air out. I did manage to smoke the walls a little in the garage. Boost went up five pounds and egt's ran up a bit faster but are managable. I can feel a definite difference on acceleration and there is a little more smoke, which is understandable. The one thing that has me stomped is why did I need to raise my idle after putting in performance injectors? There are no leaks, I got the air out, each injector lowers RPM about the same when I crack the inlet fitting and the idle returns to about same after retightening. I don't have a tach I used the middle thickness shim which was what the originals had.

I'm gonna take a guess that the new injectors perhaps have a slightly different pop-off pressure, if only more uniform compared to that you pulled.

I think its because the smaller injectors burn more efficiently on lower RPM's due to the better fuel atomization. Same thing happened when I got my larger injector tips put on. Had to raise the idle up a little bit and I can smell more diesel fuel smell on idle than I did when they were stock. POP pressures were all put back to 250 bar too.

Pop pressure on these is 260 bar. I suspected that but it ws late and I wasn't sure. THe injectors were $325.00 plus shipping from the left coast. That included the install kit. I got them off one of the Ebay stores. EIS Diesel They were brand new "VE performance injectors" according to the literature. What I need now is a stronger lift pump. At WOT pressure is below 3 pounds with a new fuel filter.

That high a pressure will lower your idle, esp if the old ones had lost some pressure. The higher pressure effectively retards your dynamic timing, which can lower your idle a hair.

Bump your timing a degree or two (~1/16" on the pump to housing marks) and see what that does.

Just ordered my lift pump from Womble Generator Service Inc. in Sufffolk VA and all the seals tube spacer plate etc. Should be in tomorrow. Some ofthe Cummins part numbers have changed so when I get the purchase order I will PM Wanna and see if he wants to update the sticky. Before you ask, it costs just over two hundred for all.

I would, but I am helping Tim install a DTT T/C and valve body in my truck March 10. I want to wait and do the dyno thing after I'm done. The money I save will more than pay for the lift pump install.
