New clutch issues

Hey guys can someone help me get a clue? Just got a new to me truck, 93 dually ex cab 4x manual trans. got it for a killer price(had a blown getrag) Pulled the trans out of my other truck and figured I'd do the clutch and flywheel also. I got the sachs clutch from orileys and got it together, worked great for about 50 miles, then I start hearing a squealing when the clutch is depressed. This would happen even when in neutral with just slight pressure on the peddle but sounds fine while in gear.

So figuring even though it's a new throw out bearing it must be bad. pull it all again and the bearing felt ok but what else could it be? Put in a new one and get about 200 miles out of it and same thing.

Now I'm getting ready to pull it a 3rd time. Talked to a buddy thats ran his own shop for 30+ yrs and he's saying it's the pilot bushing. That being said and against my own better judgement I didnt lube the bushing( as per the instructions they said no lube).

Any help would be great.

It's the throwout bearings you're getting at oreilly's. I went through 2 in 500 miles before I bought a napa bearing. They felt good but the grease had dried out in them.

Not sure it is as the first was the one that comes in the sachs clutch kit. The second one was a national bearing. I'll check this one also prior to putting it back in.

Is the pilot bushing brass? If so it's most likely an oil-lite bushing, which Chrysler developed for the military during world war 2. It's very porous and holds a large percentage of its volume in oil. You can set it on your thumb, fill it with oil, and squeeze the ends, and actually force the oil right through the brass.

No play in the shaft at all, it's nice and tight. also the end of the input is nice and clean with no burr's.

Yep brass bushing, the kit came with the roller style bearing also but I didnt have time to get the flywheel machined.

The "brass bushing" is normally made of SINTERED bronze bearing material. The normal instructions for sintered bronze bearing material usually specify soaking it overnight in clean NON-SYNTHETIC motor oil BEFORE installing. The oil penetrates the porous bearing material and is retained within it which in turn gives it self re-lubing properties.

Do you have the fork on throw out bearing correctly.

Ok just got back from a 600 mile camping/wheeling trip. Truck ran flawless.

After I had the trans out for the third time checked the input for galling, it was fine but had a small amount. Cleaned it up with a scotch brite pad slapped some grease in pilot and bingo problem solved.

So dont always follow the instructions if you know better

Yup, the dumb engineers who designed the material for the pilot bearing specifically advise against using grease because it holds dirt. In this case it's the abrasive dust residue from the clutch disk's friction material. This seals the surface and all of the relube properties from the residual oil normally contained in the bushing do nothing and the bushing runs dry. Those dumb engineers....
