Need tranny advice

Hey ya'll. I have been thinking about upgrading the tranny in my truck(727) I would love to put in a 5spd or NV4500, but I'm having trouble finding all the parts for a reasonable price. So I've been thinking about upgrading my current tranny and maybe buy a 5spd truck later. So, If I was to keep my 727. What kind of torque converter should I put in it for towing and how much lock-up should if have? also, what kind of valve body should I put in? Or should I just fergit the 727 and put in a 518 OD? I mainly use the truck for pulling my 25ft gsnk trailer or when ever I might need 4x4. thanks for the help, TractorMike

Mike I can't speak of a manual, but with recent conversations with the likes of Suncoast and Goerend, there's only one non-lockup converter available. None of them are building the so called 89% and 91% converters anymore as too many folks have whined about such-n-such not measuring up to their expectations.

If you're in the know about torque converters, then you know full well any converter's ability to transfer power is directly related to the engine bolted to it. Everyone is different. Note however that most can custom build you what ever you can afford.

At this point for example, the Suncoast version is in the neighborhood of the former two.

Regarding the A518 valve body, the folks at Suncoast pointed out that the full TransGo kit is essentially as good as it gets though they'd be happy to build you one if need be.

Goerend specializes in the '94 and up trans and therefore lack big-time in the A518 stuff. They can still mess with it though they may have to get back with you.

Hope this helps.

I thought I found everything to do my swap from 727 to Getrag for $600. Then I had to get new hyrdaulics, upgraded clutch, ujoints, tranny mount, carrier bearing, etc. After close to $2k in it and 2weeks give or take, its finally on the ground. Dont get me wrong, it will be my ideal truck (almost, with few more mods ) but ask yourself, do you have the time money and patience? I had 2 of them, but lacked in one.
