Need help, truck won't start after putting in some pump seals!

Just got done taking the pump off my completely stock 89 diesel. Locked the pump, took it off, put on a block seal, the two green oring seals on each side of it and an o ring about the kill switch screw in deal. Put it back on, hand primed it and it wont start. I cracked an injector line and it is barely putting out any fuel, just a trickle. What's up with my pump!

You need to crack all 6 injector lines. Since you basically drained the pump, it'll take a while of cranking for it to get full and prime the fuel systmem. Patience, and a few rests for the starter. It's easier to plug it in for a while, too- then you dont fight the grid heaters' drain on the battery (if that is an issue- if you live in Miami, dont worry about it).

it may have drained back to the tank also so insted of pumping th elift but so much,u can pop the bleeder screw off at the filter and use a sucker of some sort and pull the fuel to there and then plug it and then crank from there to make it easier on the starter and the pumping of the lift pump.

I am thinking that i didn't put the ball (from the governor levers?) into the slip collar that rides up and down the piston that goes in the piston head. I think the slip collar may be under the ball, would this cause my problem? I know I have the piston keyed correctly underneath.

If that's the case, it wont start. If all else fails, take it back apart and check that out.

Yes, i am going to take it back out again tomorrow. I have a feeling that is the problem. I hope it is, that way I can fix it and start it back. Glad to hear from someone that knows what I am talking about, no offense to the other guys trying to help. What exactly does or does not happen when this ball is not in the slip collar?

You basically have no control on the amount of fueling and would be left with whatever amount of fueling you would get with the position of the collar.

Since you had the pump head off, did you make sure all the rollers are still in the roller ring, etc...?

All i did was take off the head and take the piston out. I didn't go any farther and pull the cam plate and rollers out. I had the pump, head side up in a vice, and just pulled off the head. I wouldn't think any of the rollers would be affected?

Are you sure that you didn't install the piston 180deg out from the input/drive shaft? It is possible to do. Actually looking at the pump manual if you didn't remove the cam plate then the piston will only go in one direction. Its possible to install the cam plate 180deg out which will then make the piston 180deg out.

cam plate wasn't touched or moved by me. And like you said, the piston can only go in one direction. I will be pulling out the pump again tomorrow and reinstalling the piston collar with the lever ball in it.
