Need help with an 1992 4x4 auto (some info)

My buddy has a 4x4 reg cab 1992 Auto
there is a canister on the Passenger side of the motor.... It is leaking tranny fluid like crazy, right at the fitting
As you can guess I haven't a clue about auto trans
Any info on what this is would be appreciated Thank you

The horizontal canister under the turbo on the block?

That's a heat exchanger. It has an in/out line from the tranny and an in/out line from the radiator.

Have you guys tried tightening up the hoses where they go in/out?

That's the trans cooler...
It runs engine coolant in the canister and there's a tube through the inside that runs the trans fluid.

If you're leaking at a trans cooler pipe connection try carefully tightening it. At the age of these trucks, and some of the abuse they've put up with, the fitting may be too rusty to tighten and break off...

If it does you're not much worse off than now with it leaking all over.
You might find a cooler in a wrecking yard or someone here or another forum that pulled their cooler so they could get twins installed.
Or you coulg get a heavy duty aux cooler and just replace the stock one. Your temps might go up a little with only and aux cooler but it should still work.

Yes that be the one and it is tight , It looks like the previous owner snagged the line and may have bent it right at the fitting

you can buy a new one I think but they are insanely priced from dodge last I heard. I doubt you can get it anywhere else either.

trying to find a used one is probably your best bet. I haven't bypassed mine because it's cold here too in the winter and the heat exchanger actually makes a huge difference in warmup of the trans.

Just hit the classifieds on here and on CF. I'm sure someone has one they are willing to part with for a reasonable price.
