My truck is a SMOKE MACHINE

I got a new one...

Every morning, I start my truck, and the thing smokes like crazy...

It's the typical black puff, then white/blue-ish colored smoke, and runs rough til warmed up...kinda like it did over the winter, since the KSP Solenoid is crapped out. But the temperatures outside lately have been in the upper 70's to high 80's everyday.

It only smokes after it's been sitting for a few hours...with more smoke the longer it sits...

I've checked the turbo (obviously) and it's not leaking, sucking, or pushing any oil...

My oil level doesn't seem to change when I check it...usually every 2 days or so on my lunch break...

Oil pressure is fine and dandy at all rpms and driving conditions...

I don't know if it's me being paranoid or not, but I think the truck smokes a bit more than it used to under heavy throttle or higher boost...I'm seeing, or maybe just noticing more smoke than I did before this phenomenon started about a week and a half ago...

Also... My valve covers leak oil...I've ordered a new gasket set from Cummins, but haven't put it on, because I was wanting to adjust the valves soon... One day at work I spray the valve cover/injector area with some brake cleaner/degreaser, and it ran rough and smokes badly...even though the truck had only been turned off for about 5 minutes... Could the injectors be leaking? Sucking in air/oil? Dripping diesel fuel?

I ran the truck the other day, then set the Cool-Down Timer to 2 minutes, walked around tot he motor and watched it til it shut off...I looked at the injectors and I noticed what I think are "bubbles" around the seal... I'm not sure what they were, if it was diesel or oil or what...but could that be the problem?

Could my valve seals be going bad?

Any help/suggestions is always appreciated, thanks a million!

If it's only when the truck is cold, and your oil level is not changing, don't sweat it. If the smoking time is not overly long you should be fine. (30 seconds?)

It is a bit warm to be getting that symptom, but what the heck, your engine is not brand new. These things happen over time to our old rigs.

Still if it is a concern to you, you might have someone look it over. Good luck!

I would investigate those possibly leaky injectors, if you were seeing bubbles I'd correct that

I'm going to have a local pump guy tweak/tune the pump, install 3200 spring & POD injectors, and adjust the valves...While he's fiddling with that, I'll be installing my new manifold & HX-35-16cm2 turbo.

Hopefully this white/blue smoke thing isn't a huge ordeal...The pump guy said if it's the valve seals, he'd replace them for another $200 if I supply the seals/gaskets...which isn't too bad.

Right now, I'm thinking that the problem lies in the injectors, mainly because it's running, smoking, & acting EXACTLY like it did that day that I sprayed the brake cleaner over the injectors & rails while the truck was off but recently shut down.

I'm also thinking the slight increase in black smoke under heavy throttle/higher boost may be a result of the injectors' problems...I dunno...

Don't get me wrong...I LOVE to smoke out the cars behind me while laying into the boost....but I HATE the white, smelly, smoke & rough running alter-ego that my truck has each morning.

It sounds to me as though you have a leak in your fuel system that is causing low pressure/air in the lines at start up (effectively retarding the timing at start up).

If you are getting bubbling around an injector, that means that either the injector is loose, or there is some sort of leak or even crack in the injector body.

I think that re-installing the injectors with new gaskets and o-rings, etc. will solve your problems. If it isn't an injector problem, your friend will find it in the pump. But I think it is safe to hope that swapping the injectors will solve it.

Alec..that's pretty much what I've been thinking... I looked at it today again, it atleast one of the injectors is bubbling. I'm going to try and get a pic of it today

thanks for the reassurance.

Yep,,,, that should do it....

Oh, may as well replace the fuel filter too... unless you've done that recently.

You need to pull the nozzles, clean up the injector bore with a bore brush and pop test the injectors.
Once you've done that, re-install them with new washers and you should be just fine.
