Re:School Answering Machine

I've been teaching for over 20 years, and I can really relate to those voice mail responses. There are many parents who are just like those responses. I think that the two most important things that a child can learn are to read, and to accept responsibility for their actions. We (my wife and I) worked hard to impart these things (and others) to our two kids. My son is finishing his junior year at Kalamazoo College, on his way to an internship in Stamford Ct., where the company wants to look at him for a full time position after he graduates. My daughter is Salutatorian of her graduating class and going on to college to major in languages with a career path leading to the diplomatic service.

Scott,

My sister is the top rated Kindergarten teacher in the school district. However, what you just said is the reason she has filed for retirement this year. Loves the kids but has real problems with some of the parents.

DPG,
Great job of raising your kids.

Bill

Re:School Answering Machine

If you think the above only happens in K-12 schools, think again. The same problems exist in the Community Colleges, just unbelievable.

Geez, I think the problems all started when folks decided it was no longer a good idea to beat their kids back into line and to let the TV raise them. "It takes a village." -- Rumor started by the village idiot!

OK here I go Stirring the pot.
I know there are some wonderful teachers out there. BUT there are many that are the cause of this stuff.
Awful teachers that teach being a Victem and that America is the cause of all the worlds Problems. We have teachers in my town out on the street Protesting and calling our service men Rapists and Killers. One even spoke at the High School Graduation. Says alot for Home Schooling!!!!!
And I hope the Majority of good teachers can overcome the Vocal Minority and turn public education around. :'(

Hafta look a little bit higher in the chain than teachers if you want public education to be better. Wife was a teacher. She quit because of the parents. She tutors now and makes just as much money, much less hassle, and the parents and students she deals with are really caring and do want to make a difference, not just populating the planet. FWIW

Re:School Answering Machine

You guys have already stated the very reasons why we decided to homeschool our two older boys.

We had a hard time finding a teacher that would ****** our boys up by the short hairs when they were screwing around in class and teach them something. The teachers are so afraid of getting sued that they are afraid to teach ... and the result is letting kids slide through to the next grade without holding them to the standards. I found myself being the micro-managing badguy to my kids all the time just trying to fix what was lacking in the classroom (something the teachers used to be able to handle).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming teachers (the system is to blame), and I'm not promoting the "ruler across the knuckles" way of teaching but by god ... you knew how to read a job application and count back change (without a calculator) when they got done with you.

PISTOL

Re:School Answering Machine

Gentlemen -

As a law Enforcement officer for 15 yrs, I can attest to that parental denial attutide. I watched generations of families grow up to deny responsibility, accountability, and any and all fault for anything. Its called the "entitlement generation." That would also apply to almost everyone I ever cited or arrested. Personal responsibility is not a learned trait. You either have it, and know it, or you don't. Unfortunately, thats the sad truth.

Remember, some day those "children" will become responsible for themselves, IF, the parents let them bounce once. I too have a 21 yr old son at Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo, and a daughter who just graduated H.S. Neither were any problem to raise. There was no entitlement.

I'm done.

Re:School Answering Machine

Just my $0.02, if it's worth that :.
I have 2 kids one going ino 3rd and one going into 10th. I put in over 200 hrs volunteer time. It's not alot but more than many parents. Main problem I see is the parents, you can't rely on others to raise your kids. My kids don't go to babysitters. They have been complimented on their behavior on many occassions. They aren't perfect but pretty darn good.

I'll say it again Parents are responsible for their kids. Problem is most aren't, responsible that is. It's probably been said before but.. why is it that you have to get a license to drive and most anything else but at 15 or 30 a girl/women can go have a baby and just expect to know what to do. Someone please TEACH these kids/people how to be parents. Then give them a license and let them go at it. What is it with Sex Ed? They'll teach about protection and they won't teach you how to deal with "it" when the protection fails. What's that about?

I'll shut up now

Patti
