moaning sound in Rev. 518 trans

Only does it in reverse, most noticeably at idle, but does it with the application of accelerator. Acts normal otherwise as far as driveability. Don't know if trans has ever been rebuilt, has 125 k on truck. Is it something to be worried about? Fluid is ok.

Maybe the reverse band is a tad loose? Have to drop the pan to tighten it.

Maybe trans or engine mounts are soft and everything is shifting and something is grounding out. (exhaust touching something) The trans mounts do get soft.

is it happening when it is first started? try putting the tranny in neutral when you first start it for 30 sec or so. gets the fluid moving. mine did the same thing untill i started to do this. what happens as our truck sits the fluid drains out of the converter and while in park fluid is not being pumped. a shift kit supposedly fix this problem

I'm going to give that shot.

thanks for the tip! my ramcharger is making the same noises right when you first back out of my spot in the morning, gets 100ft up the road, drives fine ... will give the neutral thing a shot when I leave work today.

IIRC, there was a bulletin for replacing the spool valve for reverse. It was phenolic, or aluminum or something light that was shuddering and causing the noise. Not really an issue, but more of an annoyance. Replacing the valve with a steel one fixed it, but when I had one I let it go......as long as I knew what it was!

Thanks vzdude! Hope that's it,I'll let it slide for now. To answer everyone else, it does it warm/ cold, whenever. But all the time it's in reverse.
