I am trying to determine what size bolt I need for the bracket/plate that mounts/supports the rear of the injection pump. Seems that the bolt worked its way out after a few rough roads and lots of miles, haha.
I have no idea what size, but it is the lower-most bolt that fits through the lowest slotted portion of the rear mounting bracket/plate and then threads into the back of the injection pump.
From memory, it's a metric M8 bolt with a 10mm head, and about 3/4 inch long. Hopefully that's correct, but it's been a long time since I've had a VE pump apart.
it's probably an m8x1.25 thread and 16 or 20mm long
Just to be clear. which bolt are you referring to? you're not talking about the bracket that bolts directly to the back of the pump and goes partially around the delivery valves like in this picture are you?
Same as most of the bolts on the rest of the engine; timing cover, intake manifold, water pump, etc. M8 - 1.25x20 is what QuickServe tells me. The originals are flange bolts and have a 10mm hex. Doesn't have to match, of course. Any bolt of the same diameter and pitch will do. Maybe throw a lock washer under the head of it.
That is the bracket to which I am referring - the one in the middle of your picture that is vertical. The bolt that fits through the slotted portion on the lower end of that bracket is missing...
I am also missing two of the smaller bolts that you guys mentioned (going through the same bracket into the back of the pump) - think I have acquired two of those in the correct size. This is the original pump, and it has never been off the truck. I looked in there one day just checking things and saw the bracket out of place and said, "Huh?".
If I'm not mistaken all of the bolts that thread directly into the back of the IP all have an allen head on them, not a hex head. For the bolts that thread into the back of the pump but slide through a hole of that bracket, first, a hex head bolt probably won't fit in the hole and second, I think those bolts are longer. There are 4 of those bolts that actually hold the back of the pump on IIRC, and they're longer.
If those bolts are falling out, presumably from vibration, I would guess there are a lot of bolts loose on your motor. Sure hope the dowel pin and case bolts have been attended to at some point in the past.

Thanks for the input.
Probably lots of vibration - truck has driven many miles of rough paved roads and numerous ranch roads. I will check other bolts, but the dowel pin has never been touched. Hoping it's good.
