max mpg

I know the general questions on tweaking the cummins are how to max the horsepower and torque but how about maxing the miles per gallon. Fuel prices is killin' me right now and I'm not doing a lot of heavy hauling.

Any hints?

light foot it, mine will go up 17mpgs+ if i just unhook the trailer and that was with some towing too, i never seem to, run a whole tank without a loaded trailer

star wheel up, afc lowest setting, drive so you dont see black smoke.

if you could fill out your signature we can help even more,

Look in the stickies for bumping the timing. it gives you more power, idles smoother, AND INCREASES FUEL MILEAGE. no doubt about it. just need to buy metric S-wrenches. basicly you loosen the nuts on the injector pump and put a strap on it from the pass. fender to the pump and click the strap a couple of times. this will advance the timing. hope this helps

Alwaysworking...
Thanks for the rapid response and I'll try to figure out how to fill out the signature. I have really been watching the foot lately and seem to notice being able to get more out of the fuel I have. I haven't been able to afford a full tank of fuel the past few months to do a mileage check.

Crossy's son,
I will check out the stickies and see what I can find there. Thanks for the hints.
That is what I love about this forum!!!

looks like it, if your truck is bone stock i say thats as close to best setup for mpgs unless you want to spend fuel tuning you truck after you turn it up

I kinda figured that what I could get was what I have as far as mpg's. It burns clean, no smoke and runs smooth, but I was hoping for something more.... oh well.

Always... I bet I was gettting about 13 when I was hot footin' it. But this summer I would guess closer to 17 and sometimes when I was praying and the wind was right I swear it was closer to 20. I'm getting a student loan in the next couple of weeks and I'll be able to fill up the tank and do some real checking so I'll repost with some hard data.

i can get upward of 17 with mine, if i hot foot it i still get 15mpgs and its not stock. best we've ever seen was my mom drove it at 50mph and got 23mpg back when it was closer to stock
and hx35 would help feed some air into that truck and make it more fun to drive

BTW, Not only are prices killing me right now but I just got a great new second job at Sportsman's Warehouse in Fairbanks, AK. I teach and live in North Pole which is about 26 miles round trip from the store in FBKS. My wife wants me to get a job in North Pole because fuel is so high but the thought of working in a convenience store as compared to Sportsman's is just a little depressing, so I am trying to figure out anything that might help.

I've turned into the little old man from out in the sticks. I try to stay at about 50 mph on the highway from here to Fairbanks.

if you go too slow your lugging the engine and hurting your mileage too, its a give and take type thing
