BTW, Not only are prices killing me right now but I just got a great new second job at Sportsman's Warehouse in Fairbanks, AK. I teach and live in North Pole which is about 26 miles round trip from the store in FBKS. My wife wants me to get a job in North Pole because fuel is so high but the thought of working in a convenience store as compared to Sportsman's is just a little depressing, so I am trying to figure out anything that might help.

As far as lugging the engine I've always felt that a fairly quick run up to a good rpm and then cruise at a steady speed was the best approach and it seem to work that way for me. I wish I could afford one of those on board computer gizmos that tell you optimum speed mpg etc, but if I could I wouldn't be worring about the mileage anyway!

With a canopy and resonable driving you should be able to get close to 20mpg in your truck (on #2). A little timing and AFC adjustment might help too.

I know I have a learning curve going on here I've done lots of gas engine stuff but this is my first diesel.

It's all the stuff on the top of the IP (smoke screw and star wheel to start with) It helps control when and how much fuel you use at idle and before boost comes on.
Any chance you have a Pyro installed yet?
Start reading in the sticky and a lot can be learned.

This is just a thought but why don't You try and get some used motor oil, filter it and mix it with Your fuel. Many guys do it, as long as it is motor oil and You filter it properly it is good to use. You can use a couple house water filters one down to 10 micron then the other down to 1 micron and You're good to go. It really doesn't take much time at all and You can mix 50/50 to be safe.
akfroggy,
I'm getting 18-19mpg (mixed driving/unloaded) with the same bone-stock configuration you have & 4.10 gears + 285/75/16 tires. Do you know what your gear ratio is? If you're in the 3's, I would think you'd do better than 17mpg.

I run 285's and checked against the stock tires they're 1.097 larger...that means you're going 1.097 further than your speedo shows...
My city mileage suffered a little but my hiway is just over 22mpg.
I bought the truck as it is currently, but I think it's geared/indicates pretty close to actual readings based on those little radar/speed trailers that I pass by locally with this car and my other car.
I just got back from Florida with my truck. I took all my fuel with in the 110 gal tank. Mileage at the worst was 20.28mpg and the best was 22.20mpg avg speed of about 72mpg. There was no big spread in fuel prices along the way same price from Chicago to Jax Florida. cheapest station I found was right here at home for 4.65 a gal. I have a WH1C and an HX35 that I'm going to start play around with to see if I can get the mileage up higher. Best ever with the truck was 23.5mpg. I plan on intevesting in a GPS soon so i can compare the speedo and actual distance. I think the sweet spot for these engines is about 1700-1900rpm on the hwy.
I agree with MoparMarv. Best milage I've gotten was 1700-1900 rpms. Cruising in 5th gear.
My 91.5 came with a 21cm exhaust housing on the turbo; when I changed that to a 12cm housing, it really helped my milage, because I didn't have to down shift as much.
Before I put the dump insert in my truck, I would get a consistent 19+ around town, and 21+ on the highway if I kept it mostly around 65. Over 70 and the milage would drop off. Running 55 on steep twolane highways I would get 23. That was with the 12cm housing, and the AFC turned to the deepest part of the cone with almost no preload on the AFC spring. Tare weight was 6100 lbs. or so for the truck then.
Now that I am up to 6800 lbs tare with the headache rack/cab protector, it was hard to get over 17 in mixed driving, but jacking the timing up more seems to have brought the milage to 18.5 or better.
FWIW
