Matching injectors to pump and turbo
Matching injectors to pump and turbo
I have been struggling to find the right injectors for my new (60000mi) 12 Valve. I think I have received some poor advice. After replacing inter cooler, going to 3" exhaust system, upgrading pump to a BD 230HP, I was advised to install a Super B turbo. I had 40hp injectors from BD but downgraded to stock because of smoke but now have have to work to get 15 psi boost. But I need the HP. I now realize the turbo is rated for 250hp and up which I am nowhere near. My question is: should I bite the bullet and ditch the turbo or buy higher hp injectors?
And which ones? I took the so called 40hp to a injector shop and he thought they were only 20hp. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That is an important detail! It's a '93 250 4x4 extended cab. I'm a building contractor and often am pulling my 18' flat deck over loaded with green fir timbers. Also pull my tool trailer thru hilly country.
Never heard of a BD 230.
Basic pump tuning of the VE with a stock turbo will get you around 200 to the ground, with those slightly biger injectors you might get 250hp. If you cant get good boost you should start checking intercooler boots, i bet you have a tear. I've got your same model/year and i can tell you pump tuning is the biggest thing you can do at the power level you are at.

Matching injectors to turbo
My exhaust is actually 4". I have recently replaced the boots on the intercooler but I will eyeball them again. The receipt for the pump has gone missing so am uncertain if it was 220 or 230 HP. But because the turbo is rated for 250 up should I be looking at Stage 1 or 2 injectors? I routinely haul heavy loads. Thanks for all your suggestions.
You have a problem with your set up.
You should figure out the boost leak or other problem first.
If all you can make is 15 PSI on stock injectors it is not like it is the injectors fault.
A stock 1st gen motor should make more than that.
A motor WITH STOCK injectors and some pump mods can make 35+ PSI.
You have something else going on, would be my guess.
Throwing bigger injectors at it will most likely make a smokey mess.
Do you have an ETG gauge?
What does it read at WOT?

as previously mentioned, start by determining that you without a doubt do not have a boost leak. can you hear the turbo spooling up like hell but not making boost?
did BD give you any idea as to the tuning of the pump? does it have their aftermarket fuel pin installed? 3200 gov spring?
where is the timing set on your pump in relation to the timing marks?
I'm assuming it's retarded, if this is so, bump the timing towards the head, 1/8" to start, see how it runs. I also like to know where my fuel screw is, so I'd find runaway and then back it out 1 full turn. although I can't imagine BD doesn't turn the fuel screw in some with their "230 hp pump"
with a properly tuned pump and stock injectors, you should be hitting 35+ with that turbo. don't pay any mind to the "hp" rating. it's a 57/65/12(or 14cm), hardly bigger than an hx-35, but leap years better!

Matching Injectors to Turbo
Thanks all for you input! I'll spend this weekend confirming my turbo boots then consider the next step. With the turbo I have would anyone care to recommend appropriate injectors? I realize it is a subjective subject. Am I wrong in thinking that injectors that are flowing more fuel are going to spool up my turbo faster? Bear in mind I am not a mechanic ...
5x12 vco injector is a really good match for that turbo. But I'd get it running right with your stockers first and see how you like it
You are partially correct in your assumption. But you can have too much fuel for a turbo as well. It's like tuning the air/fuel ratio in a carburetor.

Sounds like you bought into a marketers ill advice to sell you more product. A BD "220 or 230hp" is nothing more than a pump turned up by BD and sold to you as an upgrade with a steep price.
You may have multiple issues. Verify what fuel pin you have and that it is orientated with the ramp towards the front of the pump.
If the intercooler itself checks out good, you may want to check your turbo. Yes it is new, yes they go bad out of the box, yes BD will not warranty it.
If all those check out good, you stock injectors just may be tired. Stock and running a Super B you may only see 15 psi.
And calling an injector 40hp is like saying you have a Cummins. It is generic, chest thumping, ricer math. Is it a 5x.010 injector? (5 holes at .010") Marine 155* tip or automotive 145*? Were they POD (Prince of Darkness) injectors which are old, outdated, and poorly suited?
So many things!

i'd toss those BD "40hp" injectors and get a set of 5x12 vco bosch injectors from the hungry diesel.
the stock IC injectors are weak. i'm running them with an he351 and can only hit 32 psi with my pump tuned fairly aggressively. but, even at that, you should still be seeing 25-35 psi(depending on pump tuning) with stockers and that turbo.

I'm sure you can make the 40hp injectors and super B work fine together.... it just takes some time playing with the tuning. In my experience, BD's offerings are pretty mild for whatever performance claims they make.
FWIW, I have a smaller turbo & more fuel. Between tuning and driving style, smoke is not an issue. (Unless I want it to be

Matching injectors to turbo
From what I can see, my boots are still new and no leaks. The EGT is around 900F. I can't hear the turbo spooling because it isn't! When I put my foot down it will hit 15psi briefly then fall.
From what everyone is saying I realize I need to do some pump tuning. But when I had the 40's in there I would get 30psi if I stood on it. I had a injector shop look at those BD 40's and he was convinced they are only 20hp.
I think I will try the 5x12's and learn how to tune my pump.
Thanks for all your advice!
