Making it a 4-wheel drive ????
I need some of yalls knowledgeble help, please. I have a 92 cab a chassis one ton, cummins, getrag 5- speed,4:10 rear, two wheel drive truck.
My plans are to lengthen the wheelbase 16 inches and turn it into a 4-wheel drive.
I have located a 92 4wd exactly like mine except it is a gas rig (360)
Everything looks like it will work but thought i would ask around. Maybe someone out there has done this before.
Any help/suggestions will be appreciated.

Re:Making it a 4-wheel drive ????
Well I didnt get the 92 but i did get a 90 3/4 ton 4-wheel cummins auto trans. Im guessing the transfer will adapt to the 5-speed. They appear the same on the outside.
Also I couldnt figure out the axle ratio. The tag was gone from the rear end and the front one made no sense. It shows to be a 3.07. Is this possible in the auto? The tag under the hood has faded out completly. Is there a way to tell by vin?
I just cant imagine that high of a gear in one of these trucks.

Re:Making it a 4-wheel drive ????
jughead,
How can I tell if its a three speed or should it be cause its a 90 year model?
It appears to be the cast iron transfer. Ive been told by several people that this is the good one(gear to gear) no chain. I dont have a clue but Im learning.
I wouldnt mind it being 3.07 gears, if i need to I can allways drop her into low range but if I dont use them I will let u know jughead.

Re:Making it a 4-wheel drive ????
all 90s were 3 speeds. unless someone like me changed it. if it is od the trans mount will be bolted to the trans with a fairly large triangle plate with 3 bolts. the 3 speed doesnt have this plate.

Re:Making it a 4-wheel drive ????
Since this is a 3/4 ton and mine is a one ton can anyone tell me if my one ton hubs and drums(on the rearend) will interchange with the 3/4 tons. The housing appears the same, same width. Does anyone know if the transfer of the 3-speed auto will bolt to my getrag and if so maybe what I might need(different input shaft maybe)Thanks

I'm trying to find the opposite answer, i.e. what auto trannies will work behind a 91 NP205 that's behind a getrag currently
maybe we should swap trannies and transfer cases? We've got a gear vendor OD on the truck we're thinking about modding now, so we could put that on your stuff perhaps

Hey that swapping deal sounds interesting. Im not a expert onthese Dodges yet (exblueovalman) but Im trying to learn.
On another note as I had mentioned before the rear has no id tag. I jacked it up and 2 shafts turns equals almost 2 tire turns(1 and 9/10)
How do I figure this?

[/quote]I assume you had only one wheel off the ground? Try it again with both wheels off the ground, then count how many turns of the driveshaft are required to make one turn of the tires and that number will be your gear ratio.

Re:Making it a 4-wheel drive ????
Thanks wannadiesel,
3 tire turns equals 7 shafts turns so I geuss it is a 3.07. Oughta run 100mph in 4th gear behind getrag??
I dont think Ill be going that fast. My ole truck has never in its life been that fast, it might disentergrate or something .

Three tire revs to seven shaft revs would be a 2.33:1 ratio. (you just divide the tire revs into the shaft revs).
The early automatics came with the 3.07, and at least one fellow on this board has a truck with the Getrag that was custom ordered with the 3.07 axles. Personally, in a 4x4 with a turned up engine and a gentle driver, I think the 3.07's would be a nice set-up. You can always shift into low range if you need a lower gear -- of course a twin stick conversion is nice if you actually want to try to shift out of low while moving . . .

Okiedokie-one turn on the tire(both tires off the ground) equals just a tad more than three shaft turns. Man I gotta practice on this counting stuff
I took my soapstone and marked the tire and shaft and then done it three times so maybe I got it right this time ;D ;D

Re:Making it a 4-wheel drive ????
Well the swapping begins tommorow(Sunday). Since no one here seems to know what will interchange with what, I will post my progress and findings in case someone else might need the info.
furious70, I have access to a 93 auto that was just rebuilt about two weeks before the truck was rolled over(once) That should be an OD trans or I will still have this 90 3-speed. If u need one e-mail me. We will work some kinda trade(rather trade than use cash) cash allways causes trouble.
