I have been using butyl for when I have to drill holes into anything I want water tight. I like it better than silicone caulking, etc. It's the same thing used on truck campers, antenna connections, etc.

Put it in between the two surface areas. Wrap some around the screw/bolt under any flat washers. When it is tightened it is forced into the crannies, stuff oozes out in all directions. Then you can remove the excess with your fingers. Doesn't get all over everything when you are working with it. Can use your bare hands. No rags, stuff migrating, sticking to everything you are working with.

Since it is so easy to work with, you can do a better job of sealing. I can anyway. It's sort of like a gooey, sticky, silly puddy. Comes is a small roll typically. Camping World, rv supply, truck camper places, Super Walmart's used to carry a little roll. Lot's of places should carry it. Might be called "butyl tape".
